memorial day - what is it?

  1. I was looking at the thread about what you all plan to eat for memorial day, and would love to know what memorial day is about. Is it a rememberance day?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to enlighten me.

    Jax,

It is a day set aside to remember the ultimate sacrifice made my members of the US Armed Forces.

While most veteran orginizations observe it with placing of wreaths in cemeteries, on bodies of water, and flags on the gravesites of those who died in the service of their country (USA), many now just use as an excuse to party for three days at the begining of summer. For most who party the weekend away, remembering those that died in the service of their country is not even a thought, IMO.
