Med students show respect at graduation

  1. So I'm attending the graduation of all the professional schools at the University of Maryland including Law, Nursing, Medicine, etc. WELL, when the president called for the nursing school graduates to stand up, you wouldn't believe what happened! All the Med School graduates stood up, took off their caps and BOWED at us!!! I just couldn't believe my eyes! Is this a tradition or something?

How cool is that. They should always bow when we are present in my opinion.

Maybe they are an understanding class that was taught and understand taht we as nurses, are there to serve and help them do thier jobs and without us they would be up the creek. ( I knwo we are also there to serve and help the pt. too but also the docs)

Pretty cool -- must be a tradition at that specific school (or maybe they just dreamed it up this year!), because I've never heard of that before.

At my diploma school, the hospital medical staff took up a collection each year and presented each grad with a dozen roses at graduation. In addition, to that, several of the physician practices funded $$$ awards for the "best student" in their particular specialty which were awarded at graduation each year ... Lots of the docs would actually attend the (nursing) graduation ceremonies.

Awesome! I hope that is something they do because they have learned that nurses are a vital part of their team! *clap*

I work at a teaching hospital and the med students are very respectful and polite with the nursing staff. I have even heard them say that they were told that the nursing staff are their partners and greatest allies! (Of course, I'm old enough to be their Mom too and maybe that has something to do with it - lol). Very cool story - thanks for sharing.

I graduated from there last year. The new docs-not med students anymore-tipped their caps to the nursing grads. The new nurses were supposed to tip their caps back to them.

This is a 100-year-old tradition of the school. I think though, way back when the nurses were expected to curtsey to the docs. The bowing thing is new though.
