Makin' a cake

  1. We're having a birthday party for my fiance's daughter this
Sunday. She's turning 10. Last year we had an "under the sea" theme, and I made a really cool cake. I tinted the icing green &
blue and peaked it up like waves. Then I put Sweedish fish (those
gummy fishies) jumping in and out of the water with toothpicks
disguised with icing. Then the seaweed, yada, yada. <OMG I
wish I had a scanner so I could just show you a pic>
Anyway, this year she wants to have a "Spring" theme. So, I
got all the Spring decorations, a springy menu (complete with
a green punch I call "bug juice")....and now for my dilemma....
She wants a "flower garden birthday cake".
Now, I am getting sorta good at cake decorating. I even bought
a Wiltman cake decorator set for beginners. <Woot!>
But a flower garden cake is a bit of a tall order!
<OK, I'm sorry this is getting so long, I just really want to make her this cake.>
So here's what I was thinking of doing: Tint the frosting green.
use the star tip to make "grass"& Green sparkly sprinkles. For the
flowers, I was gonna use my candy molds to make red chocolate
roses and stick them in the cake, then use regular rose molds to
place around the outside of the cake.
Anyhoo, if anyone has any other ideas, please share. (Heather,
I know you're reading this!) Or, we could just talk about other
seemingly impossible requests your kids have had!!!!

Thanks for reading my long post!:kiss

Shell, maybe I'll make two cakes! This way, if I goof the flower
garden cake I'll make the bunny!

Wow! I figured Heather's ears would be burning by now

This one! This one! I really love this cake, but I have a boy, but I keep it bookmarked just in case! The butterflies are molds. That fish one sounds cute, Nursey!

I'm liking the grass idea....maybe make petals for flowers out of different coloured marzipan and position on the frosting with little sugar rabbits or birds or something between them

either that, or pipe the flowers on in white frosting and sprinkle with flowery-coloured edible glitter

Failing that, buy loads of different sugar flowers, dump them on top of the green frosting in vaguely bordered areas, and there's your garden

Yeah, Franny, I like your thinking! I do have a leaf tip for making
    leaves....
But what about the red choc. roses sticking out, no good?
    Maybe not.

I like sticking-out flowers on cakes, gives them height. Flat cakes can be boring, if you build them up they take on another dimension.

I'll have to get some pics of the cakes my Mum makes....she did a drum kit for a friend of ours, and an upright piano for my sis when she was too young to appreciate the hours that went into it!

Or I could roll out some different colored gumdrops and cut
them into flowers, and put them on some green toothpicks.

That could be cute! Or maybe use fruit leather instead, to save you the drama of having to roll out the gumdrops.
  14. by NursieRN
Well, I was just thinking gumdrops for the dimension aspect.
By fruit leather, do you mean like fruit roll-ups?

Geez, I hope I have enough food for all these people! The kids
are gonna love the bug juice! I'm making it out of lime sherbet,
lemonade, green jello, icecubes, and maybe a little club soda.
