LPNs changing central line dressing

  1. what do you think of licensed practical nurses changing central line dressing

admin note:i changed the title of the thread (old title: friends) to better reflect the main question of the author and closed the poll, since it was unrelated to the title. hopefully this will clear up the confusion in this discussion.

enita, the poll doesn't go along with your question, but I think any nurse who has been educated/checked off, should be able to change a central line drsg.

Can you clarify the question a bit more, what you're thinking, pro's and con's? Do you want to know who's hospitals have what policy's allowing?

I am strongly opposed to sexist doctors performing central line dressing changes .

Lpn's who have been trained in it are fine in my book, tho .

I'm not sure why a doctor should be reprimanded?
And why shouldn't an LPN do a dressing change?

Absolutely they should... and DO... they are more than qualified.

LPN's should be able to perform a central line dressing as long as (just like an RN) they have been educated/trained to perform the task and demonstrate proper sterile technique. However, doctors who check out nurses butts while they're doing the task should be reprimanded. <snort>

    Ditto.

Is there anywhere they DONT change central line dressings?

As an LPN the best TIME to change one is after drawing blood from the line. Because you are already there. Kills two birds with one stone.
