oh i am sooooo sorry. i know just how you feel. i put down my 14 year old beagle last year. i still cry when i think about it....the hole in my heart never will go away. he was a part of the family. my heart goes out to you, really it does. i am so sorry for your loss, my dear. here is the poem my vet sent me in my condolence card, along with a swatch of my dog's tail. i still have it today. and it still makes me cry:

    rainbow bridge

just this side of heaven is a place called rainbow bridge.

when an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to rainbow bridge.
there are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
there is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

all the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
the animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

they all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. his bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

you have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. the happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

then you cross rainbow bridge together....

So sorry for what you are going through. My beautiful Rat Terrier, Jake, passed away in August and I miss him so, so much. I never realized how much the loss of a beloved pet could hurt.

We planted a beautiful Old English Rose bush for Jake. I think about him every day

    Many hugs to you.

Gosh - I'm so sorry! I'm going through something similar right now. Boomer is our elderly sheltie/shepherd that we got from the pound three years ago. He was heartworm positive and so has a chronic cough. Now, he has arthritis. I just found out too that he has pancreatitis and possibly Cushing's syndrome too. He hasn't eaten or drank much in over a week. The vet wants to hospitalize him but even then there is no guarantee that he will get better. I have to call the vet at 0800 tomorrow and let him know what I want to do. I talked it over with my husband and I think I'm going to put him down because the vet says that he hurts. I'm really agonizing over it though too.

It's so hard when our pets are feeling like crud, and we can't fix it for them. Your puppy knows your love is always there, even when you make tough decisions they are made out of love.

    My sympathies.
