Lenten Challenge

  1. Is anyone giving up anything for Lent? I always look@ this time of year as a new beginning. I really slack off during the winter but @ this time of year & with spring just around the corner I feel it's time to get on the ball. I give up sweets every year during Lent & succeed but this year in addition to sweets; I'm giving up the 5 white carbs. We'll see how it goes!!!

I am not giving anything up, as I have decided to take on something: I am journaling my spiritual thoughts each day as a sort of prayer.

I had to work on Ash Wednesday. The hospital chaplain was holding services from 0600 til 0800 where you could receive a prayer, ashes and take Communion if you wanted. It was very individualized, brief and wonderful. Lasted about 3 minutes for me. I am Catholic, and the chaplain is Methodist, but I took Communion anyway. I know the chaplain very well, and while the Communion was not Catholic (or a true Sacrament), I felt it was being done reverentially, so I did it anyway.

So I had this great big ash Cross on my forehead all day. I think I must have had said to me "Hey, ya' got something on yer forehead" at least 40 times through the day!!! (And NOT joking) And when I answered, "It's Ash Wednesday", I had 4 people say to me, "What's that?" So it was a good way to sort of witness, even though I don't generally do that.

Have a great Lent, everyone! I will pray every day for all my AllNurses family members. :angel2:

Does this mean that any given moment you are not doing all three things at the same time? Whew!! That's quite a sacrifice- I don't know how you do it.

That was nice to have an actual service with communion. So sad for the 4 people that didn't even know what Ash WED is. I was asked by a patient what happened to me that I had a black & blue mark on my forehead. OHHHHHHH !! With everything going on in this world; I feel you should be grateful. We had a eucharistic minister from the Catholic church & a representative from a Lutheran church in to give ashes & would you believe the comments like, "you got ashes from a Protestant "; "I want Catholic ashes." Unreal!!!

Well, I've always thought that the idea was to give up something for which you spend a bit of cash for. That way you can take that money and give it in the alms.

So some years, it was easy. When the kids were home, we'd give up our Pizza. We used to have a pizza every single week, so that was good. No pizza, bit of a sacrifice for the whole family, money in the box. Nicely done.

Now that the kids are gone, I don't do pizzas, I don't really "do" much of anything. I'm diabetic, so I don't buy candy or pastry. I really miss pastry.... *sigh* And Girl Scout Cookies!! I LOVED those!!!! I don't buy fast food, and hubby and I don't go out to eat much at all.....

I of course do the fasting on Wednesday and Fridays, but I don't have anything special to give up that I pay money for. Except bottled water, and that doesn't seem like much of a muchly to give up. But that's all I could come up with. And I just naturally don't eat meat, so I'm not even giving that up. This is just too non-sacrificial, if you ask me.

I'm fasting today after I had my IV iron tx yesterday. I had a bit of a reaction, so that's my last session!!! YAY. But they had to give me another dose of the decadron and benadryl AFTER the iron went in, as well as before, and my stomach is TORN UP.

    Love

    Dennie
