Keep your butts in the car!

  1. Yesterday I took my niece Emma shopping and to McDonald's. We had a great time and she really jabbered since Kennedy wasn't around doing the talking for her! We went to a store where you can make your own bath gel and shampoo....for kids only.

I had the windows down and we were singing to a Dora song in the car while on the interstate. Car in front of me threw out their cigarette butt and the butt came into the car, still smoking and red hot and landed in my nieces face!!!! I was so flipping mad I wanted to kill the guy that did it. I really wanted him to hurt like he hurt Emma. She was screaming, crying "Aunt Beth!". Cried so hard she threw up. Of course I immediately pulled the car over and comforted her as cars whizzed by at 70mph. She clung to me and didn't want to get back in her carseat. It broke my heart that this little girl is scared of anything (well, except strangers). Also, our day was wonderful and then this happened. Physically, she's ok. I took her to Border's and bought her LOTS of books. She's a book lover like me.

I still want to kill the guy.

So keep your damn butts in the car! That's why car makers put ashtrays in cars. Your car already smells like smoke so a cigarette isn't going to stink up a car that already stinks. And you're not fooling anyone - driving with the windows down and losing the cigarette when you're done isn't going to get rid of the smell that permeates from your mouth, hands, clothes, and hair.

How scary. Glad your neice is OK. We all need to think more about how our actions impact others!

    Oh, don't get me started on this . . . . :angryfire

I have a story . . . . when my son was a year old we went to a baby shower and there was a woman smoking, in the house of course. She had the cigarette in her hand and her hand was down where my son was toddling around and she moved it backwards right into my son's face. Burned his cheek.

Tossing a cig out the window causes fires too . . . .

People are so thoughtless . . . :trout:

    Sorry about Emma.

Your poor son! I would be livid! What did you do to the woman?

Personally, I'd grab her cigarette and burn her face. I'm still really upset if you can't tell.

    Awwww your poor niece!!

This stuff gets me so mad and worked up too!!

They have signs on the freeways here that say "keep your butts in the car", but people still throw them out the windows. Especially with it being SO DRY here, driving up to the mountains where the trees are, it's so incredibly dry that throwing 1 butt out the window can ignite the inferno. UGH.

RainDreamer, you gave me an idea.

I will be contacting my state rep and notifying her of the incident. She knows me well, she used to be a coworker. She has made major changes regarding highways and interstates. She is the one who introduced the bill that requires all drivers in Indiana to pull over or slow down when there is a cop on the shoulder. Guess what? People follow that law. No one I've seen has not followed the law regarding this.

Legally, isn't it littering? And if you are in the West or a dry area you have to worry about fire. I think it's silly to throw them out a window when you have an ashtray. When full, take ashtray to garbage and dump, provided there are no hot butts.

When are people going to take responsibility for themselves? Throwing butts out of cars can harm someone or it can start a forest fire. My feeling is that there is no excuse for it.

Yes, it's littering. The fine here for littering is $500 and they have it set up to where you can go on their website and call if you see someone littering ...... and you get give them the license plate number. I assume they send them something in the mail regarding litter education, although I dont know how helpful it actually is and if that mail just ends up being thrown out the window too!

ah, such blatant ignorance never ceases to amaze me.
    i hope emma is ok?
this just further reinforces my desire to legally ban smoking.
there is nothing positive and everything negative/dangerous/disgusting.

So sorry to hear that happened. Poor Emma!

I was lucky enough to catch the license plate number of the last idiot who threw a cig butt on my lawn, and turned him in. It's littering here, and a big fine is assessed for it. This is a HUGE HUGE pet peeve of mine. THat and seeing idiots dump their ashtrays on the ground/parking lots. I mean, come ON. How hard is it to find a garbage/butt can for that????!!!

    Grrrr

so sorry about what happened to your niece, Beth.

    Good job, Deb!!

It all comes down to respect. If people had respect for other people's things, then this crap wouldn't happen. But not all people have common courtsey or respect.
