I've got a big fat swollen ankle and need some advice

  1. Ok, just so you guys know.....I'm accident prone to begin with. I decided on Wed night to slip on a throw rug and ended up with a really nasty sprained ankle. Had injured it about 8 years ago and decided to self-treat for a while. Still ended up in the ER (where I work) on Thanksgiving and bought myself a nice shiny pair of crutches and a really cool ankle splint. The crutches are in the corner and I'm still hobbling around. No way I'm using crutches. Anyway, now the lateral aspect of my ankle is really hot and red. No increase in pain or swelling. So, I call the ER to ask them what to do. Tell them I'm a nurse and I work there.......the answer I got was "I can't tell you anything you'll have to come back to the ER" Yeah, right. I'm home alone (DH is at work) and I have been taking pain meds so there is no way in he** I'm driving.

    SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......... I thought I'd ask the wealth of knowledge around here what could be going on.

    Could be a fracture, could be torn ligaments or tendons, or it could just be a really nasty sprain. So, how do you find out? Get your a$$ to the ER, get it x-rayed and examined by a competent orthopod.

    Not fractured. Had Xrays in the ER on Thurs. I partially tore the ligaments in it 8 years ago. I think maybe I might have done it again. Going to see my ortho on Monday AM for an unrelated matter. I'll have him take a look at it. But in the mean time, should I be worried about the warmth and redness.

    Well, since I'm dealing with ortho stuff this week . . . I can sympathize greatly! Heat and redness could equal a DVT. Since you had an injury there, you might have had some bleeding, that is now going to cause you some problems. And you know as well as I do that many fx's don't show up on first X-ray.

    If you want to be stubborn and wait until Monday . . . Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate. (RICE). If it's red and warm, I would NOT walk on it, and use the crutches if you have to stand up to pee, otherwise you're down for the count.

    If you don't want to be stubborn, do what Kevin said.

    So, take care of yourself . . . and {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}} for getting hurt.

    Hey! Thats my answer to pain! or just about anything really. I did a spiral fracture in my right ankle that didn't show on the initial x-ray? Heat and pain though, RICE and see a doctor, you walk all day on those things, you don't need to totally stuff it yet. Hope all is well and that you'll be up and about soon.:kiss

    Put you azz on the couch, elevate your ankle on pillows, ice on and off for 15 min. each, ibuprofen if you aren't allergic , call Dr. tomorrow you may need another xray. If you have to get up, USE YOUR CRUTCHES !!!!! No weight bearing on that little piggie.
