It is fair time again

  1. I love this time of year.
going to the city, county, or state fairs.

The food..... corn dogs, huckleberry ice cream, hot dogs, elephant ears, cinnamon rolls, burritos, kettle corn, and so much more....

The animals...goats, pigs, sheep, cows, llamas, chickens, ducks, and more...animals kids have raised from tiny babys to show at the fair, every kid a winner. Kids learning that raising an animal is hard work, and learning the pride that goes with a job well done, and the sadness when their animal is sold to the highest bidder...

The exhibits.... as seen on TV, whatever it is it will be there, the local head shops selling their wares, the bottled water company trying to sell you water (and giving it away at the fair), the carpet cleaning companies trying to entice your business, the face painters turning all sizes of kids into cats and birds and other animals, the home builders, the tractor exhibit, the cow milking, the sheep shearing, the vegetables, the quilts....whatever it is, it is probably here...

the freebies... refrigerator magnets, plastic bags full of whatever you can imagine, state highway maps...

The flower building, the vendor building, the animal barns, the food booths...Americana at its best...

But my favorite activity is staking out a nice place in the shade and watching the people....kids with faces painted like tigers chasing each other...adolescents eating ice cream and holding hands...moms trying to watch their kids..the kids eyes full of wonder at all the marvelous things to see and do, lovers walking arm in arm, impervious to the world around them, people in the prime of their life strolling and looking, couples in the twilight of their life walking hand in hand...as much in love now as they were 50 years ago...

Yes, I do like this time of year, to bad it is over so quickly.

bob, i agree, fairs go by so quickly. i'm not a big fair goer but do enjoy our local fair. there is something about the atmosphere, scents, lights, brings back memories of being a kid again. we have judging, horse races, parade, just to name a few things, in one short week it's over.

i think there is even a mud volleyball competition that has been a favorite of many !

We love going to the Bloomsburg (PA) State Fair every year and usually just go for the day (it's a 2 1/2 hour ride from where we live), and this year we're spending the night in a nearby motel so we'll get to enjoy it TWO whole days! I'm with you, 2ndCareerRN-- The sights, the sounds, the smells, the TASTES-- a true Fair for the senses! I love animals and enjoy getting the chance to get up close and personal with swine, cattle, poultry, bunnies, you name it. We "graze" our way around the Fair with everything from freshly made apple cider to birch beer to hot sausage sandwich (hubby's faveorite), potato pancakes, freshly roasted peanuts in the shell, pierogies and other polish food prepared at a Catholic church's food stand-- Mmmmmm.... Delish! They even have deep-fried Oreos or dill pickles for you strange food enthusiasts!

And yes, the people-watching is the BEST!

I used to love the state fair -- UNTIL I moved to Tennessee.

Ewwww, yeuchh. It's in a bad neighborhood, they are like the last fair and I'm convinced the rides are unsafe. They've been put up and taken down so many times already this summer - no DOUBT there are a bunch of screws or wingnuts or something gone missing. The scariest of my neighbors is usually hired for the state fair, so that tells you something about the people who work there.

I don't remember a single state fair since I've been here that there hasn't been violence or someone killed on a ride (or under one or something).

I used to love fairs - grilled corn on the cob, and yummmm - funnel cakes, and looking at all the farm displays. Maybe I'll try to think ahead and go to some other state fair next year.

    Love

Gee.....I haven't been to a fair in a very long time, but when I did go, it was so much fun! I'll have to try going again since reading your post brought back such wonderful memories for me.

The last fair I went to in NY...a couple of people died from e-coli. I guess cows and food vendors don't mix well eh?
