Iraqis Welcome U.S. Marines in Shatra

  1. Iraqis Welcome U.S. Marines in Shatra
    March 31, 2003

SHATRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iraqis shouting "Welcome to Iraq" greeted Marines who entered the town of Shatra Monday after storming it with planes, tanks and helicopter gunships.

A foot patrol picked its way through the small southern town, 20 miles north of the city of Nassiriya, after being beckoned in by a crowd of people.

"There's no problem here. We are happy to see Americans," one young man shouted.

"It's not every day you get to liberate people," said one delighted Marine.

I saw a young marine this morning on the news singing with a bunch of giggling Iraqi kids and giving them candy. Sure was a nice sight!

Anyone else notice that there are an awful lot of Hispanic soldiers? Just something I noticed.

It's interesting to hear how Marines can act as humanitarian people and come to the aid of others. That may be all well and good, and i ain't knocking this, but can/should the Marines be peacemakers? Peacekeepers? Maybe the Marines have changed quite a bit since I did my four year active duty FMF bit back in the 80's. Lol. The Maines may look all warm and fuzzy, with images and thoughts that sway to pleasatries. Is that what actual Marines like to see or be thought of as? Wheel never know unless we can be there and talk to them all. [My Marine Corps color is red to show the world the blood we shed]

Mario. for the last time you were not a Marine--EVER! You admitted it to Kevin McHugh on these very boards.

I qote your own words:"Kevin, Your right, I could never had been in the Marine Corps because everyone in the Marine Corps thinks just like you."

Mario, I don't know if all of the Marines have seen the torture chambers in Iraq but I'd be hard pressed to believe that a big bad Marine from the United States would actually think that it's okay for a Regime to torture and kill it's own people.

Yes, I think they can be peacemakers but it won't be easy. I think it will be difficult to know exactly which are civilians and which are soldiers of the Regime since the clothing may be the same.

mKUE, I don't want to spin off on a propaganda tangent, touching on issues like Iraqi torture chambers. Marines really and truely are not a peace-oriented organization. I just can't help but feel silly seeing pictures of Marines holding babies and looking like they are there to help people. Marines in Iraq have a mission which is to destroy Iraqi's who are in the way, believe it or not. The media news we are fed will not "go there." I don't want to get involved with the politics, please.
Marines fight our country's battles, on land, air and sea. First to fight for right and *FREEDOM*, and to keep our honor clean.

here we go again another mario raggucci fantasy. he never was a marine and would have a hard time proving it. and he knows it.
he has not been posting much over the last few days wasn't it a pleasant suprise

why don't you grow up some time soon mario!

now back to the real topic, the marine of today have a dual role. and one can be the regular old bad ass and still be a peace keeper and earn peoples trust. that is what needs to be done in that region and culture. just going in and kicking their butt will not solve a thing or make us any better in their eyes.
