BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

Did you expect anything but this from the idiotic people that still support Hussain and wonder why we are poking around in his country to see what weapons of mass destruction that they have pointed on us.....I have been unable to even think straight all day cause of the tragedy. I am one of very few in here that can remember the Kennedy assasination, the Apollo fire and the Challenger crash also and you know......I remember exactly where I was when each event occured......

erm well I wouldnt say he was reelected.....
wee bit of a dictatorship goin on in them there parts
however, I too am not surprised, nor do I see why we are wasting time on feeling angry or upset at what this article says...
we know that its wrong , consider the source and rise above it.
people in places like Iraq, sadly, are raised to hate america, just with any form of hatred it spews forth from generation to generation and they dont exactly have the freedom to break from that unhealthy pattern of hatred, lest they be killed ...
I'm not defending anyone, I just want to focus on whats really important here, the loss of precious meaningful life...
the people who aimed for the stars not only in their dreams but in real life... I admire them immensely, not afraid to take a risk , exploring a faraway place away from your family and never knowing if you're going to come home or not yet chasing that dream because most likely its what you've longed for since you were 6 years old or something...

of course its hurtful, if it wasnt , what kind of ppl would we be?
I just dont want to devote one more iota of energy or thought to this kind of thing , there is enough misery and tragedy in this situation alone, nevermind bringing up the hurtful words of a nation that is about to find itself at war with the U.S
I'm taking the politics out of the situation and remembering those amazing individuals.... and they really were quite remarkable..
