Iraqi people greet American soldiers

  1. With jubilence, hugs and kisses. And the tearing down of a huge picture of Saddam Hussien.
I dare say that someone is glad we are there.

NBC news tonight, as well as local news station. I cannot spell the name of the town. The town is in the Southern end of Iraq, near the oil fields.
Just on the news too, an entire division has surrendered, 8000 men. It's Iraq's 51st division.

The town was Safwan, where the cease fire was signed at the end of the Gulf War. There were tears, laughter, and happiness evident everywhere. They were clearly glad to be out from under the boot of Hussein. On man beat on the face of the painting of Saddam with his shoe.

I was watching the news and they brought up the significance of the shoe. In their culture, showing the bottom of one's shoe is a sign of disrespect as if to say, "you are scum, I am better than you". That's the significance of the shoe reference.
