  1. Iraq Acts Against Al-Jazeera Network

DOHA, Qatar - The Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera announced Thursday that Iraqi officials are expelling one of its reporters from Baghdad and barring another from reporting.

The station interrupted a regular newscast to announce that Iraq (news - web sites)'s Information Ministry had informed it that correspondent Diar al-Omari, an Iraqi, could no longer report for the network and that visiting correspondent Tayseer Allouni must leave the country.

"Regretting this decision, Al-Jazeera has decided to suspend its live broadcast from Iraq and will only broadcast recorded items received from Iraq," the station announced.

There was no immediate announcement of the move from Iraqi officials, who have taken similar actions against several Western networks, including CNN.

Western critics have often accused Al-Jazeera of a pro-Iraqi bias in its coverage of the U.S.-led attack on Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s government.

The station is partially financed by the government of Qatar, which also hosts the U.S. military's Central Command for the region.

    my question is why?

The even bigger question is... Do they realize that means Al-Jazeera will only be broadcasting Iraq's "side" of the story? Doesn't sit well with me.

It's on my Yahoo homepage, stargazer.
    Here's the link.

Me thinks the Iraqi's are planning something that they don't want the rest of the Arab world to see. Makes me worry what that something is.

I don't know. It sounds to me like Irag only threw out 1 or 2 of Al-Jazeera's reporters, and Al-Jazeera was offended by that and voluntarily pulled the rest of its staff out of the country. It's hard to tell from the way it's worded.

Actually, no. Al-Jazeera said they wouldn't do any more live coverage from Iraq, but they would still air taped material. Sorry, I think we'll still be seeing the Saddam videos.

Kinda O/T, but there's an interesting thing in this week's Time or Newsweek, can't remember which, where they show pics of Saddam next to pics from 5 or 6 of his body doubles. It's amazing--you really can't tell the difference.
