IM self injection

  1. I'm putting this here cause it's more of a personal issue rather than professional. Do you know anyone who does IM self injections. Have you ever seen instructions on how to do this safely and advice on sites etc. Thank you.

    I have a B12 deficiency and would like to give them to myself to simplify my life.

    [font=lucida sans unicode]when i was a home health nurse, i used to teach people with ms how to give avonex shots to themselves.

    [font=lucida sans unicode]the manufacturer recomended giving it in the thigh when they were injecting themselves. (we would also teach significant others to do it in the deltoid). we taught them to inject themselves in the middle third of the thigh, where you would give a baby their vit k or hep b shot.

    [font=lucida sans unicode]i only had one person who couldn't be taught, she was just too emotional about the whole thing.

    [font=lucida sans unicode]good luck.

    I gave myself my flu shot this year. I gave it in my right thigh (like a childs shot). I went in really fast just like I do with patients and it didn't hurt a bit. I wouldn't hesitate to give myself any other shots if I had to. Good Luck.

    Same here. I gave myself a flu shot a couple of weeks ago, in the thigh like Dutchgirl, and wouldn't think twice about doing any other IM if I had to. It's a piece of cake.

    It's just freaky to do. Sometimes I get my mom to give it to me (she's also a nurse), but she lives an hour away. I tried to give myself an injection in the thigh the other day but it took a lot of time to psych myself up and I couldn't get past the needle tip. Maybe you need to pretend the leg's not yours?

    I always gave my b-12 shots in my rump, because for some reason every single time I used the thigh, i bruised something fierce, even though I aspirated and my leg would hurt to walk on. I personally would suggest trying to do it in your hip - it was better for me, not easy, but wasn't as bad pain wise after. Just my .02 on it. I was giving myself b-12 shots weekly for quite a while and then quit. I really should start them again as I have been really low on energy with the recent nasty flu I caught.

    i think you need to give yourself the next injection with someone there to coach you through it.

    when i did the avonex teaching, the rule was that the patient had to get the avonex that day before i left, but i wasn't allowed to give it. so they had to give it to themselves (or their so had to do it). thinking was that once they got over that first shot, they would see that it wasn't so bad, and be able to do the rest. worked out well.

    so maybe the next time you mom comes, you could have her "make" you give yourself the shot?

    Dear scaredy cat, :chuckle

    I agree with Jnette: Just pretend you're an orange.
