I'm planning on having this "hymn" for my funeral....

  1. [font=CentSchbook BT]This is no joke, actually.....

I was researching info for the memorial service for my recently deceased BIL and wanted to make absolutely sure I had not overlooked something important, so I googled "Methodist funeral hymn."

I got a number of hits, including one that was titled, "Have you chosen your funeral hymn yet?" I thought that sounded like a great possibility.... Maybe there was a list?

So you can imagine when I went to the site and read the comment someone had added...... (scroll down)

(further down..... I want you to savor the anticipation.....)

    (soon......)

    BWaaahahahahahaha!

I thought of Samba Pa Ti by Santana, to be played at the end of the ceremony. It starts off slow and reflective, but picks up speed so that the mourners can all conga out of the doors!

I always thought "Dante's Prayer" by Loreena Mckennitt would make an AWESOME funeral song. It's beautiful...but not comical like the above ones. :P
I hope to donate my body to science and for no one to bother with a funeral for me!
Formal ceremonies and expensive things that are impractical just aren't my style.

My brother passed at the age of 34, d/t cancer of the thymus gland. His funeral was the most unique i have ever attended - He planned it completely. Before the service, PinkFloyd was playing. For an exit song, he had chosen, "For those About to Rock, We Salute You", by AC/DC. I think it brought a smile to many faces, when our father, walked to the stereo, and turned it up louder.

My brother chose his favorite music, and I am glad we were able to respect his wishes.

    "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum . . . . .

When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
    He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
    Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up with
    The spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

Norman Greenbaum also wrote "The Eggplant that ate Chicago"
Used to shop at the same market in Hollywood.
Then we heard he married and was raising goats in Northern CA.

I remember. He has his own website - photos and all.

Dh wants "Kneel at the Feet of Jesus in the Mornin'" sung at his funeral. We've only heard the Willie Nelson version, but he likes that one.
"Well I guess I been hanging around too long
It's just about time I was moving along
But I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning
And don't you worry and don't you moan it's just about time I was moving along
But I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning

I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning
I'm a gonna leave this sinful world before the dawning
Don't you worry and don't you moan it's just about time I was moving along
I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning
    [ piano ]
And when I'm dead and you carry me away
Don't you bury me deep cause I ain't gonna stay
I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning
Just a little bit of dirt and a little bit of gravel
Don't you weigh me down cause you know I gotta travel
I'm gonna kneel at the feet of Jesus in the morning
I'm gonna kneel at the feet...
(I'm gonna kneel at the feet...)

You may think I am sick, but Come Monday by Jimmy Buffet, and also off his new CD there is another song I love. I have informed my husband to play those songs as he tosses my ashes into the ocean so i may snorkel forever.

Well, I really intended this thread to be a bit of levity...... just goes to show.

We actually had In the Garden as the intro, On Eagle's Wings (the Catholic version--I'm not sure there is a difference, but that's what the title said) in the middle and Amazing Grace before the last prayer.

It was moving and it did the trick. Not a dry eye in the house.

As long as we are kind of on this topic, an odd thing happened after the BIL's memorial.

We were standing around in the parking lot, waiting for DH's sister (the widow) to get her stuff organized, and DH popped the trunk of our Kia Sephia.

An alarm sounded. From the car.

The car has no alarms. Trust me, it is an old stripped down model with nothing fancy--four on the floor, no power anything. I have owned it since 1998, and I got it for a song because it was nothing special even then.

Personally, I think it was the BIL.

I took it for a happy "See ya!"
