I'm back!!

  1. Hi everybody!!

It's been a long dry spell since I was last in contact with you all, mainly because we moved and the computer got totally trashed in the transition from good old slow 56K to streamlined high-speed Internet. We had several people look at it and go "Aw gee, maybe the gzorninplack futzed the dinglehoonus and farked up the dooflotchee"..........at any rate, it's taken us a couple of months to get it fixed, and in the meantime it's summer and there's a helluva lot of yard work to do on our property and we are deliriously happy in our big house in the forest. Hope to read some more good stuff from you guys soon.......I've already browsed a few threads where the hatchets are out for good ol' Dubya, and you may be sure I'm sharpening mine too. (I do hate to say I told you so, but.......!) With a daughter going in the Army soon, I'm even more eager to see a regime change in Washington next year, otherwise she might be going to Liberia or Lord knows where Dubya will send troops next so he can avoid dealing with stuff here.........

    Ahhh......it's good to be home.

My dh, a computer geek, looked at the above, made a face and commented, "I thought those were nursing terms."

    Welcome back!

Yes, but did you finally get the high speed internet? Isn't it glorious?

    Putting this in break room.

Thanks, you guys. Yes, I do have high-speed internet now, and it was worth the wait. No more funny dial-up noises, no more getting kicked off-line, and best of all, no more b****ing from my family wanting to use the telephone (imagine that). Of course, I've made good use of the time I was forcibly away from this website, clearing half an acre of weeds, putting in a fruit and veggie garden, and keeping up with all of it---not to mention getting a heckuva tan in the process---but oh, is it nice to be able to "chat" with you all again.

Nice to see a familair name-welcome back...I just got DSL and had a heck of a time installing it also....Hours of "tech" help via the phone and 2 trips to the Gateway store...But now we LOVE the speed...After all of that it turned out to be a problem with the Verizon DSL disc! Once they sent me a new one it installed easily...I recommend it to all....

ok... what all's involved in the DSL set up? Have been giving it serious thought, but have heard all kinds of horror stories about cost, etc. Do they have to come out to your house to install? My local one offers one for $14.95 a month for the 1st three months, then $39.95 for the remainder of the year's contract. $50.00 connection fee.. but if you sign for 2 years, no connection fee.
Are there other hidden costs? Does this plan sound reasonable?

There are better deals out there-depending on their availability in your area.I am paying 34.95 a month for Verizon DSL with MSN 8.They have several packages-some for just DSL if you want another ISP...My first 2 months were free-they sent a disc which takes you step by step through the installation...Very easy on a newer computer-we have windows 98 and we also needed to install something called an ethernet card to hook up the DSL (had to go buy it-I'll ask my husband how much it was) No initial charge for hooking up or installing-tech help via the phone is free..Once we found out we had a corrupt disc and received our new one installation was a breeze....It is a wonderful thing.....Now we are looking at updating our computer system-I want to go with a Pentium processor-Now that I have gotten away from s-l-o-w dial-up I want speed -speed and more SPEED...Everything opens so fast-I now have Verizon for my long distance and local phone calls,too-----One bill for EVERYTHING!

Thanx KTWLPN... I'll do some checking around. I still need to upgrade myself, still on Windows 95. HAVE downloaded "Proxycon" a year ago and have been quite happy with it..just about DSL spped at only $8.95 a month.. simple, easy download. It worrks everybit as good as they say it does.
But I still have the phone issues.. downloaded "Callwave" which is pretty kool, too, and the option of "take the call" which is nice, but you still are disconnected from the internet each time you take a call... or you can simply let it take a message, which and it displays and records.. then you can call back at the time of your choosing.
But by the time I add up all the neat little downloads and monthly charges, I think it would be close to that of simply going ahead with the DSL....

OK.. now I'm more motivated.. something else to get done this year.. Thank You !

I'm paying something like $85.00 a month for a package that contains both expanded basic cable and my high-speed Internet. It is a lot of money, but we have a cable monopoly in our area and we're kind of at the mercy of these people because they're the only game in town. Considering how much TV my family watches and how much educational and entertainment value we get from the Internet though, it's money well spent, so I just pay the bill every month and shut up.
