......go see The Legend of Zorro
I loved the first movie, "The Mask of Zorro", with Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but this one is even better. It's got all the smarts, swordplay, and sassy good humor of the original, only there's more of it, and EVERYBODY kicks some serious butt---even 11-year-old Joaquin, the son of Alejandro and Elena de la Vega (AKA Mr. and Mrs. Zorro). The villains are deliciously villainous, the lead actors are as dashing as ever, and the good guys aren't what they seem.
Even the soundtrack is somehow more full-bodied than the original, and sets the perfect tone for this period piece, which features sneaky lines like "Where's the bathroom? I need to powder my cheeks" and Zorro's 'fearsome steed', Tornado, who is just as cantankerous as he was in "Mask" (he drinks liquor, belches, and smokes a pipe, and at one point he refuses to obey a command until Zorro issues it in Spanish and then yells "We're gonna have to do something about your English!!").
I don't know why Ebert and Roper didn't like it (they loved the first one) but the theater audience actually APPLAUDED at the movie's end today........it was 2 hours of pure escapist fun, and the only thing I regret is that it took the moviemakers 7 years to come out with this highly enjoyable sequel.
See you at the movies!!
