I think I fractured my ankle :(

  1. .......August 26 th ! I stepped off a step onto someone's sandal and I completely inverted my foot so I landed with all 145 pounds of myself....on my ankle...and it popped. Loud.

Needless to say...I fell like a rock and injured my side but that's the least of my problems.

I couldn't bear too much weight on it at first and it swelled a little.....discoloured a little and I limped a little. But I never went to the doctor. It never looked bad enough .( after reading all these threads on what drives nurses nuts to see at the ER...no way...myself included) I applied RICE and that was that. It kind of went away after 1 week.

I am on my feet up to 10 hours straight when I volunteer and did so since Aug 26 to Sept 9 when I went back to school . Major walker here

Well........a couple of days ago I woke up to it throbbing at night. I actually felt like crying...but you know me....strong like bull *said in best indian voice :chuckle

All yesterday..periodically...it would throb. And its swollen again with some dicolouration. I can and always could actually pinpoint a small place where it hurts like hell and it seems to have moved up my ankle towards my calf.

What do you all think? Get an xray? Maybe its fractured? I've walked on sprains before and I was told not to make such a big deal over them. Sooo many docs rolled their eyes when I'd go back to the ER for another one.....I AM a klutz!!!

    Thanks guys.

Well...having had a simular injury a few years ago, not going to the ER right away my suggestion is:

Go to sports medicine!!! Yes get an xray, and they will fit you with a real good ancle brace...better than the air one if it's not a break. Plus they give you advice on exercises when it's the right time.

At first I went to good old Health Services...and they really screwed me up. They had me walking way too soon according to SM docs. I had injured several tendons. The last thing I wanted was a long term problem, and because of being missinformed at the start and doing too much too soon --- I developed planter fas. (sp??) problems which I still have now 5 years latter....plus a pulled muscle in the opposite leg because I was limping so much.

So there ya go---best of luck---sorry for your injury!

Z, why are you asking if you should see a doctor? If your friend told you, I fell 3 weeks ago and it still hurts really bad, would you tell her to "suck it up and walk it off?"

Why are you suggesting _you_ should?

Now get to the doctor! If you don't want to go to the ED, do you have a PCP?

    ...alright alright.

I guess I wanted to see if any one could speculate if it was a fracture or not. You know.....when a windshield gets a small crack in it..and you push on it...it spreads?

Just wondering how much of an idiot I've been and how bad I exacerbated the injury.

But you pretty much made my mind up NurseRatched.

I'l l pop over to get an xray at the clinic. :imbar

    Thanks.

Z....I walked off a step "funny" during Psych/Community Health Rotation in March "03. Twisted my ankle. Hah! Found out I had a broken bone in my foot.

PLEASE! Go see a Doctor. I don't want you to suffer.

I did a similar thing, I have weak ankles (ya know weak under heavy body). Anyway - I did a similar thing, took a bad step on my ankle. I do this from time to time. But a couple of years ago when I did it, it was different. Near blinding pain. But guess what? I got up, walked (limped) on it and slowly it seemed to get better. I even did clinicals on it.
Well last semester of school comes around and I'm finding my ankle is hurting and swelling for unknown reasons (nope having twisted it recently). Went and had an xray and guess what, it was broken, but that was from a couple of years ago, I'm sure of it! So whats happening now is I have gout and it's spread from my big toe to my ankle break, pleasent huh? If I were you, I'd get it taken care of and not put it off.

Indeed, please get it taken care of! And let us know what happens, OK?

    Wellllllllllllllllllllllllll......................??????????????????? :chuckle

    And............????

Is it, or is it not?

    (((HUGS))), Z.
Get it fixed, either way, and stay OFF the darn thing for awhile ! Methinks you gave the least amount of attention to the "R" in the RICE!

Hope it heals well, and that you're up and running again.. WHEN THE DOC SAYS SO !!!

Ouch, Z!! Sorry you're in such pain, hope you went to the doc and got some answers. ((((HUGS)))) Let us know!

    You guys. *shakes head. ((((((hugs))))))))))))

Thanks for all your kind words :imbar ......and the scolding. I needed it. I went but the x ray machine was not open so Monday it is. I'll let you know either way. It doesn't hurt so bad today but ,whatever........I ain't falling for that.

Like Jnette said: I've been sooooo neglecting the R in RICE. :chuckle

I broke 6 bones in me but I've never heard (or felt) of being able to walk/use said broken bone if it didn't mean excruciating pain!

Hope yer bones aren't cracked Cath
