I no longer feel safe!

  1. Today when I returned home from running errands, I had a message on my answering machine from a young man that I had hired over the Summer to do landscaping. He did a fine job and I was prepared to give him more work, inside my house, as he is a general contractor. I also had a message from my BIL, stating his apartment had been robbed. Guess where this is going.....seems a witness places handyman in the middle of the robbery. To say the least I am livid, as we gave him money above and beyond what his work would have cost, just to help him out. Now I fear for the saftey of my home, specifically for my two precious fur babies that are here alone while we are at work. Once again, my big heart has gotten trampled on and I am angry. So, I made a call and as of tomorrow at 8:30am my home will have a home security system installed by ADT. The real smack in the face here was he was calling for a loan, seems his water had been shut off. I just feel so angry that I could scream. I enjoy doing nice things for others and this really hurts because it seems I'm frequently getting kicked in the head. Sorry for the rambling, I just needed to vent, I'll survive, I always do, but it makes you not want to help others but I know I'll do it again, cause that's just me. Guess I have sucker written on my forehead! Duckie

So youve convicted this guy on 3rd hand info?

I think Duckie was typing fast but thinking faster. Missing info?

It's always prudent to be careful but your kindness is what will get you through when it's all said and done.
    Keep on keeping on.

You may just be jumping to conclusions here-the witness may not be reliable.I would withold judgement until the whole story comes out.Also-helping people is good-but the "save the world" syndrome can destroy YOU...Everyone can't be helped-not everyone really wants help...many just want attention and often their problems are of their own making..It's taken me a lot of years to realize that some situations are created purposefully by someone who wants to just suck the life out of others-and gain the willpower to steer clear.Experience has also taught me that whenever I hold out a hand it's because I want to-not because I expect a certain response.I am not disappointed then when nothing comes back to me.....

You're right, info was left out. Handyman's best friends girlfriend rides to work with BIL. She knew where he kept his $. Nothing else was taken except the drawer with the cash was open. The vehicle was described as well as the clothes handyman was wearing which BIL saw him the just hours prior to robbery. I realize one is innocent till proven guilty in a court of law BUT I'm not willing to risk my little ones for this. I'm being safe, so I won't be sorry later. To clarify, when I give, I expect NOTHING in return. I do so because I care, and I chose to help, but I think it only resonable to expect that the person you help will not come back and cause you harm.

My motto says it all, trust your instincts, if you feel you need a security system then go for it.

Duckie, this stinks. Unfortunately, there is no sure fire way to tell who is "safe" and who is not. Sometimes you just have to take a chance and trust people. You can take precautions though and check the references (and better business bureau) of anyone you let into your home to perform work.

I'm glad your getting a home security system. Is one of the precious fur babies a pit bull?

Duckie........I can guess where all his money went. Try looking up his nose. It is a shame but it seems like it is getting harder and harder to trust people. Protect your fur babies at all cost, even if you have to take them somewhere else while you and Jimmy are at work. Get the neighbors to watch for him at your house too.

I wonder if you missed part of the story. I am not sure how you know that the handy man was your handy man? Did he know your BIL? I always think a home security system is a good move.

Handyman had never been in BIL's apartment BUT the girl he drives to work, her boyfriend has been many times, knew the layout and SHE was the only one that knew where his $ was kept. Even my husband and I did not know. Her van just blew the motor, hence needed fast cash, handyman has been calling me for months for "more work" and I even referred him to our facility to become a CNA which the starting pay is $10.00. The class begins next week and his name is not on the schedule. Con't. to say he cannot find a job. come on, let's face it, you can find something, even minimum wage to tide you over. Where I work would have treated him good and the pay is not bad for starters. I feel I have bent over backwards to help this man. I find it very hard to believe that the same two men were seen wearing the identified clothes by the witness ( the ones my BIL saw them wearing) in the same vehicle one of them owns, not to mention the phone number he left on my machine was that of the other man's house. No, you can't convict anyone on circunstantial (sp?) evidence BUT would you be willing to risk your critters with so many details incriminating him? Not me, not to mention, I have many items in our house that could be pawned easily. Luckily I do live in a small town with very nosey neighbors, so I know that we're pretty safe now that I have the system in place, double secured window locks and one very BIG MOUTH Jack Russell terrier that prowls the territory looking for any little pee ant to bark at. We even have motion detectors in place, which will also be great in case of smoke from a fire. I think I covered all grounds and at only $32.99 a month. My babies are worth much more than that!!! I'd rather waste the money and never need it than to come home and my life be destroyed with dead babies. That's one nervous breakdown I could not rebound from. I had to laugh at my daughter cause now she can't raid Mom's fridge anymore, not giving the code to anyone. Might as well laugh otherwise all is left to do is crying and I did too much of that last year.
