I need your advice friends

  1. Hello my friends. Listen, next week when my mom goes for her checkup (God willing) I an going to ask him to put me on an antidepressant. This whole summer has been so bad and so stressful for me that It's been extremely hard to function. I can actually feel myself slipping away under the weight of all that has happened and continues to happen. My mom's Dx is left ventricular hypertrophy with exacerbation of COPD. She tries so hard but is still weak. I think this may be the beginning of the end for her. I PRAY I'M WRONG,but it sure don't feel right to me. I know I must be depressed when my Peds instructor asks me if I am. Couldn't lie to her. Told her yes. It's bad folks. Real bad. I need to start drug therapy cause my thoughts have been getting progressively darker. I think you all know what kind. What antidepressants work the best? I need to know. I need an emotional boost without feeling al drugged out. As always, I love you all and your advice and prayers are very appreciated. I was afraid to tell you how bad I felt earlier for fear of being seen as weak and scared. Well I'm here to tell you I AM. Warrior Woman.

    Theresa, there is no shame in that. I think you are stronger than you know. When you exhaust all your reserves under periods of stress, there is nothing left to fall back on, so that is where you replace the reserve with meds. Nursing school is so stressful, and with all you have been through, it can't have been easy.

    I think it's a good thing. Let us know how it goes. {{{{{WW}}}}}

    Talk to your doctor for antidepressants - it's all individual.

    PS what happened with the school?

    After all you've been through ... of course you need some help. If you didn't I'd think you were superwoman. Goodness, you're life has been crazy for some time and with the very recent clinical incident - you're stressed. No shame at all in admitting it - I'm glad that you can be honest with us and yourself! (Makes it a lot easier to take care of yourself when you're not in denial.)

    I have a friend's mom on Paxil, and she gained a significant amount of weight after going on it (75lbs). I have a friend on Celexa - she didn't have the weight gain, but she's not taking the full dose (can't afford it) and it's NOT working for her. That's all I know from friends/family's experience.

    It's all individualized ... just stick with it long enough for the drugs to take effect. The only other things I'd suggest are counseling (might be free through the school or insurance) and exercise. Lifting weights really does it for me.

    Keeping you and your mom in my prayers,
    Kitty

    Theresa, its great that you recognize that you need some help right now. As the others have said, what works depends on the individual. And while some people see a difference very quickly, for others it takes some time before it really kicks in. Counseling is often very helpful as well.

    The days are starting to get shorter already. As we head into fall be sure to get outside for a bit each day. A little time spent in a brisk walk can do wonders. Studies have shown that antidepressants are more effective when combined with an exercise program.

    My thoughts are with you.

    It is a strength, IMHO, to know when to ask for help.

    I have tried ST. John's Wart with much success. I got it from a Health Food Store. It calls for 900 mg daily but I do well on 600 mg. I can really feel a difference when I forget to take it. Also, I sleep better when I take it early in the day. I was a surprised to get immediate relief from taking it.

    My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

    warrior woman,
    everyone's body is different...no one antidepressant is better or worse than another...it may take some trial&error to find the right one for you..also please, please try to fit in some counselling..i know your life is hectic and your schedule is tight...but you need to set aside time and see a professional...in that session, YOU will be the focus..YOU and YOUR life and how things are affecting YOU and how YOU feel...got it? don't let anyone talk you into/out of this antidepressant or that antidepressant because their mother's hairdresser's dog's groomer's housekeeper's mother-in-law gained 100 pounds after being on it for a week, or had yellow warts sprout off their forehead...everyone is different, everyone reacts different to different antidepressants...

    hugs to you...i agree with others that you are strong ..but you need help now, as you realize...and that IS a confirmation of your strength-that you are strong enough to admit you need help and to ask for it...
