I may not sleep for a week after this...

  1. I agreed to work a double tonight. My first night shift in about a year. I AM SOOOOO TIRED right now but have allready drunk 4 cups of coffee and one cup of regular coke cola. I am probably going to be flying on sugar and caffiene for awhile after this. Luckily I am off today (monday) and can TRY to sleep. How are the rest of you who are awake at this time of morning doing? It is 0430 here and I am over halfway through my second shift. Then I can pick up my paycheck and pay some bills before driving the 1 1/2 hours home.

I'm up! I was getting ready for work, but they just called me off!!!!

    YIPPEEE!

Census must have really dropped! Charge nurse said they had to call 9 people off!

I'm gonna go to lunch, get some pictures developed, and make something yummy for dinner that I wouldn't normally make on a work day!

Hope you get some well needed rest KaraLea!

Good for you, Heather! Have a fun day. I'm off to work . I can't wait til school starts again so I can get a break. Whoever thought of this 5 day workweek deserves to be shot.

Kara... I can relate. I've been working a lot of long shifts lately, and living on caffeine and sugar. I've been getting those late night muscle spasms again, which means I'm not eating well enough, so I'm making an effort to drink more water and eat vegetables. Not that I'll do that in place of the caffeine and sugar, mind you, just in addition to it.

    Have a good day ladies!

    Kara,

I used to work a lot of doubles. I stayed awake with caffeine too. I could do three doubles in a row, then just zonk out for about twelve hours. I only have a 20 minute drive home though. I stopped doing that after a little while though because I always felt like he!!, and hubby said I was just too grouchy.

i dont mind the once in a while doubles if i get time off to recuperate.
my biggest problem is passing the 9am meds. it was so hard to concentrate. i had to tell myself to get it together and kinda reset my mind so that i wouldnt make a mistake. (7p-3:30p)
lat time the charge was cool about it and let me chose which patients i wanted to keep from my assignment. of course i chose "simple" abdominal pain....lol...turned out to be the worst of all my patients. q1 hr morphine injections...sat on the call bell all day...tons of orders...tons of tests...yeah good choice.

Kara, you were getting that second wind wern't you. When I did nights especially doubles, I would feel real bad about 3 am. Then sometime after four am usually by five I would get this burst of energy and alertness. I always called it my second wind. By 7am I would feel as if I could stay awake for another day. Something to do with body clocks I suppose.

I decided to work another double tonight. I offered before they could ask. I don't really think that they would have asked because they really aren't that bad off tonight but I can use the comp time on the books for the next time I want an extra night off.
