I guess it's time to start building...

  1. A log cabin. My daughter is officially a Senior now in High School which mean only a year before she heads out to college. When she goes one of the boys (who both share a room now) will move into her room.
I need to build a cabin maybe 14x24 with a loft for sleeping for when she comes home on weekends. We can also use it as a guest house or for my weekend poker parties with the guys. I know it's time. I'll start cutting my logs this summer and start building during the winter.
I've never built a log cabin before but thats never stopped me from doing something before. I'll be glad to accept any hints or advice.

    What a caring Dad!

With all that work, don't forget to stop in here.

Eldest son graduates on June 17th. All signed up for Drexel university in Septmber as commuting student---now threatening to live in a dorm to escape me. He told me last summer was moving to the basement, started cleaning it up, then stopped. Told me he is taking Senior Week off to spend in basement replacing ceiling tiles, moving in then will work for me three days a week to help pay for college rest of summer...

Maybe hubby just needs to start a cabin too.

Too cool, Russell! Be sure to keep a photo journal of the process. I'm impressed by just the thought of such a project. And not just a cabin, but one hewn from your own trees! I gotta see this!

That's awesome Russell. If you head for your nearest bookstore or even grocery store, there are log home magazines there that list free workshops around the country. Some are free anyway. Write 'em down and check them out.

I'd love to have a log cabin. No place to put one though.

Do start sending pics when you start. We'll enjoy our dreams of log cabins vicariously through you.

Log homes are absolutely gorgeous. My best friend's cousin builds them for a living, but that's about the extent of my knowledge. Good luck and have fun.. things have so much more meaning when you can say, "I did this myself."

My son and I went and looked at logs today. Pretty much up in the high country but there are plenty of good ones to choose from. I will cut 40 18 footers. I've staked out the location (not squared yet, just a general idea of size). I'll have to cut a few trees down where I'm going to build. The boys will of course be helping me every step of the way. They may want to do this someday too.

You are a real do-it-yourselfer! Much luck with that project! My husband is really good at a lot of things, but I think you may have one up on him! He builds his own decks, etc., but this is really a big project!
