Hypnosis for weight loss?

  1. Have any of you ever tried hypnosis for weight loss - either to get yourself to exercise more, or to control your cravings? If so, did it work? Were you in a group session, or was it one-on-one?

There's a hypnotist scheduled locally this week to do a session on weight loss, and I'm curious about it, but don't know anyone who's ever tried it. Is it a bunch of baloney, or does it really work? I don't want to lose a whole lot - maybe 10-15 pounds - but have a really hard time controlling my cravings for carbs.

Thanks in advance for your input!

I know a woman who tried it to lose wt. and lost 30# (Don't know how long it took her to do so).

I know another woman who tried it to quit smoking and it didn't work at all, but then again I don't think she really wanted to quit. Her b/f made her go. (same hypnotist, both one-on-one, single session, focus for both was cravings.)

I've never tried it, but good luck!!

Didn't work for me (several years ago). I'm now doing weight watchers online, since ~ Feb 3, I've lost 20#s. I call it: "Following the Directions"!!!

prmenrs, if you have a minute can you answer a few questions I have about WW online?

When you join, do you receive all of the booklets used in the program, or do you just look up what you need to know online?

Do you weigh yourself and they tell you how much to loose, or do you tell them how much you want to lose?

How much does it cost, and do they offer online support by WW representatives?

Is online better than joining WW the conventional way? (Meetings, weigh-ins, etc)

Please don't feel obligated to answer this! If you are so inclined, you can pm me if you'd prefer! Thank you!

    To respond.

I looked up what I paid: $59.95. I don't seem to paying monthly, don't recall what that included, might have been some sort of subscription.

You don't get ANY of the paper stuff. (they do have a store, tho.) But, everything is online. You journal everything you eat online. They have a big database of food "points", and you can add a food if it's not there. Then, when you eat it again, it's in the data base. You can enter a recipe ingredient by ingredient, and the computer figures out how many points it's got. Then you can put it in "your" recipe file.

Points are based on calories, fat and fiber. Don't know the ratios, but that is what you have to enter to get a point value on the food. How many points you get is based on your weight. You get a range, and you're supposed to stay w/in the range. No fasting one day and bingeing the next. If you know you're going to a special event, you can stay slightly under range and 'save up' for the event.

You can EARN up to 4 more by exercising. At the end of the day, you "bank" your points; the computer keeps track and zeros you out on your weigh-in day.

You can see a chart of your weight progress over the weeks; if you lose more than 3 #s in a week, the computer scolds you because it's 'dangerous'. They want you to lose slowly--you didn't get fat overnight, so...

    There are online support groups.

Overall, I am very happy w/it. 20#s is always a watershed for me, I'll have to work hard to keep going.

You can pm me for more, if you want, I have another allnurses/WW friend, and we're supporting each other, so come on in!

I'm doing WW Online too. Since Jan 5th, I've lost 32 lbs.

You can pay for 3 months at a time (which is a little cheaper), or month by month. The month by month is $14.95/month. I started by doing the 3 months, & am now doing month by month.

I HIGHLY recommend WW to anyone who wants to lose weight. I'm very skeptical on hypnosis and other "lose weight without trying" type programs. If you follow the WW program, you will lose weight!

(yikes, I'm sounding like a commercial again)

My mother did hypnosis for smoking cessation and was able to quit cold turkey. That was at least 10 years ago!

Good luck on your weight loss efforts! I know the only way to keep my weight in check is to exercise.

Congrats to your mom, that's wonderful!

As far as exercise goes, I agree that it's very important to do this, and it's a key factor in maintaining or losing weight.

But my problem is that all the exercise in the world can't come close to competing with my carb addiction. I swear, carbs are like drugs for me. Sometimes when I crave them, I get headaches or shaky. It's not just hunger, because it doesn't go away if I eat something that's low-carb. I truly think I'm an addict, and am trying to find out if hypnosis may help.

The hypnotist had his group session last night, and I didn't go because I want to hear from more people before spending my money on it. But he's in town a few times a year, so there's always next time, if I think it will work.

    Thanks for your comments!
