Hockey lawsuits

  1. OK, I'm not for excessive violence in hockey or anything, but I don't think lawsuits are the answer. He was badly hurt and I feel for him, but he could have caused injuries just as severe when he hit other players. He left one Vancouver player with a concussion in a previous game. It just seems stupid to me that you can bash people around routinely, then sue when it happens to you.

I agree fergus. The culture of hockey is that you fight, it's a culture they and the fans created and expect. Don't cry and sue when it happens to you.

I think the lawyers are changing everything....

and not for for the better in so many cases.

They will bring suit for anything. Somewhere, sanity needs to again prevail.

Fortunately it looks like he'll have to sue in Canada where the awards are generally much less. I can't imagine him getting too much money from a BC judge or jury.

Next they will be suing in the boxing ring for head injuries. Sheesh.

I agree. You can't expect to dole out the punishment and then be upset when the opposing team has had enough and hands it back to you. Granted Bertuzzi's hit was absolutely reprehensible and inappropriate. However, he has already been fined and suspended by the NHL. I truly feel that he is sorry for what happened and has paid his penalty. What I DON'T understand is why Moore waited until the last possible second to bring the suit. I also have heard that Bertuzzi has repeatedly tried to call Moore to apologize in person and his calls have been refused.

    Lawyers only serve their clients.

As the saying goes "Don't blame the sword but blame the hand that weilds the sword".

I disagree. Their lobby is huge and they are changing it all. They chase after cases like this. That is what differs them from many of the rest of us.

    *shrug*

Probably. But if people didn't feel the need to sue at the drop of a hat, no matter how big their lobby... I doubt they'd be getting much cases.

I'm not denying that they weild considerable influence (heck, half the damned politicians in the country are lawyers)....

.... but it's demand and supply.

    -----and supply and demand

or chicken and egg. I think the ads for lawyers encouraging people to sue need to be the first to go....

then legislation limiting their awards in such ridiculous cases.

Deb, there are ads out there encouraging people to pick up their phones and engage in phone sex too, but you don't see every Tom, Dick and Harry doin' it

People choose to do it Deb. I agree that lawyers ought to be atleast a bit more scrupulous and try and atleast discourage people from making a mockery of the justice system.

    It's a crying shame neverthless.

I started learning about football in high school when I dated a football player. My husband played football and his school was the first undefeated team in 30-odd years - he would go back to high school in a New York Minute if he could. My two older boys played football and my tush sat on many a cold stadium seat . . . I suspect my 4 year old son will play someday too.

    I "get" football.

    I don't "get" hockey . . . .

    And I agree with Deb . . . .lawyers :lol_hitti
