help me please!!! just got very upsetting news.

  1. I'm so afraid to speak of this on here, but I need help and input please. Please don't shut me out or shun me away. I was diagnosed with hcv on tuesday of this week and i'm so scared. The DR. has retaken the test to conferm this, but the first was an agressive test ,so I'm pretty sure this next will be the same. What dose this mean for my carrear for nursing in the future??? What about the pt. I have cared for in the passed ???Is this a death sentence or what, ( career and social wise),what about my kids, and hubby health now.??? HELP, HELP

USSIE -- hang in there. What type of hepatitis do you have? You must have been tested for hepatitis prior to employment -- it's possible you could have picked this up at work. Have you had your Hep B shots? Please relax -- hepatitis does not mean a death sentence -- nor are you doomed to a life of loneliness and being shunned. You have a chronic medical condition -- as a nurse you know that information/knowledge is power -- empower yourself ... for yourself ... for your family. I'm quite certain that you are covered under the American Disabilities Act -- you need to find out what your legal rights are regarding employment. But most of all, know that you are not alone. Others care about you. You may have hepatitis -- but this does not define who "YOU" are -- no more than hair color, blood type, eye color, etc. You will face challenges -- have highs/lows -- but focus on maintaining your best level of mental/physical health. Relax -- take some time for yourself -- empower yourself. And know that prayers are being sent out to you from Sue. God bless.

I know several nurses who have had hepatitis and they went right back to their regular careers/lifestyle after the initial illness. I guess you are always a carrier...but, they work as nurses and have husbands and children. I don't think they tell their bosses. I don't recall being tested for hepatitis prior to employment. You aren't exchanging bodily fluids....so, why not take care of them....?

You also wouldn't believe how many people have been told their Hep B didn't take. Everyone who got it should be sure it took. Please don't be careless. Mine didn't and I found out when I was tested following a stick. Got it over and the second set worked.

Many Many healthworkers have hep C. As everyone has said, this is the scariest part for you but you observe universal precautions for yourself and your patients and that won't change. Take a deep breath and relax. We are all here for you. (sorry to speak for everyone else but from what I see you are a great group of nurses who ARE and HAVE BEEN there for me and everyone who needs you)....It will be ok! Hugs to you!

Thank you all for the encouraging posts. It's fri. and no word yet on the retest done tuesdays. The initial "OMG" has wore off alot, and I've decided to give it my best. I figure if the 2nd. conferms and I somehow have trouble w/ work in the future. I can always work w/ pt. who have the same illnesses of the like. I figure God allowed this happen for a reason, so I'm know I will be led to that reason in due time. I will keep y'all posted, bless you all again for the encouragement. You are all true friends. :kiss
