Have I been threatened? Can this be real? What should I do?

  1. Hi Cyber friends, I'm really upset and could use your advice. I'm not very computer literate or legal savvy so I really don't know what to think or what to do. You may or may not know that I have been complaining about a bulletin board IggyPlanet (Iggy is short for Italian Greyhound) because they are such narrow-minded people. I mentioned that my dog had puppies and I started getting all these nasty replies about being irresponsible, money hungry, you name it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Anyway I have been posting here how happy I am that you all are so open to all opinions and how we can voice our opinions without being ugly and how wonderful and supportive you all are. Yesterday I got this e-mail from IggyPlanet and I have no idea what they are talking about? Different names? Different IP address? They listed in the subject the various user ID's (6 of them!)they were accusing me of being and I have no idea who they are. Only one, who is my daughter and she does use my computer. But what's wrong with her joining? Here is a copy of the e-mail. Should I be worried? Is there something that I should do? Should I contact my service provider and how would I do that?

This is to inform you of the intent of the owners of IggyPlanet to press
cyberstalking charges against you. After being banned from IggyPlanet, you have
rejoined their site using several different names and IP addresses. This is a
cease and desist order from the Owners of IggyPlanet. All accounts and IP
addresses have been forwarded to your service provider and the North Dakota Attorney General with a copy of the banning e-mail. All subsequent visits will
be logged and forwarded to your service provider and the North Dakota Attorney
General per North Dakota Criminal Code Title 12.1 17-07(5).
    Respectfully,
    Pilate
    Owner of IggyPlanet

I have never stalked anyone in my life! It's not in my nature. For God's sake I'm a nurse! I'm into helping, healing, comforting, you know how we are. I'm like sitting here with my mouth hanging open. OMG ! Please give me advice. This really has me upset. I had logged in several times from work in the past, like months ago, when I was just bored. Were not supposed to be on the internet. I was on for only like 3-5 minutes. Will they report this IP address to my hospital? That part really scares me. Of course everyone at the hospital knows what kind of person I am and would laugh at the stalking theory but I'm still scared of what could happen. Please help! Thanks

I'm sorry that you are going through this tough time. Unfortunately you are going to run into all sorts of people online that have their own warped sense of values. Don't even bother to get yourself upset. They would have to have some kind of proof if they were really going to bring any kind of charges. I think it was a terror tactic used to scare you (which it did).

I'm sorry you had to go through all that DutchGirlRN, but my honest advice would be to stay FAAAAAAAAAAAR away from that site. Please inform you daughter as well.

Do you access that site from home? Are you on AOL? Or do you use a different form of internet access...

Sever ties with this website, don't visit it again (why would you want to, if they are unfrendly to you anyway?), and advise anyone else that uses your computer to stay away from it. Delete bookmarks to it, etc.
I think you just got "warned" and I seriously wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you stay away from that site from now on.

Thank you I will avoid it like the "plague". Interestingly enough........I started my own site www.all-iggys.org a week or so ago because I so enjoy talking iggys just like I do nursing on this site, anyway, the creep who sent me that e-mail joined my group. Hasn't posted but I see him on my members list as of yesterday along with another nasty from the iggyplanet. It's a free country, Thank God, so I'll leave them there and just ignore them. What's your take?

    Why yes it does

You see, if you access internet through a cable modem for example - your IP Address is FIXED. It never changes, unless you turn off your modem and turn it back on after more than 3 minutes. So if you have a fixed IP, you can disprove the claim that you are accessing the site through different names under different IPs

If you PM one of the MODs on this site - they can tell you under what IP yours posts are made. Please check over a few days times - the results should be fairly consistent.

If you access internet through dial up (or sometimes even through ISDN), your IP address invariably will be different each time.

In anycase, I agree with the others - why go to a site where all you get is abuse. Geesh! Good job in setting up your own forum

Thank you Roy, it's so nice to have a computer smart person on my side. I can surf but that's about the extent of my expertise. That is very interesting information that I did not know. Thank you!
