Hamster, Gerbil or Guinea Pig?

  1. My husband and daughter have beaten me down on this one, and I guess I am resigned to letting vermin into my house. Which would you choose and why? Is there anything I need to know?

Geez Kristy... you might as well have put kitties in the poll!

Seriously, I had 2 hamsters when I was younger, Laverne and Shirley. One of them died while we were on vacation (they were adequately cared for) and the other got loose (one of many times those smart little boogers did that) and my dog broke his little neck and brought him to me when I got home.

Dood, they were always getitng out, and I was always too scared to handle them without think gloves.

    Snakes. Now those are pets.

guinea pigs are great for kids,....they are cute and rodenty which appeals to the munchkins...but they are bigger and therefore less likely to be lost and only found when the heat kicks on..lol...

We have not had any of these, we have had mice and rats. Our friends have a guinea pig. Our daughter fell in love with it. It squeaks and is pretty clean as far as vermin. Actually believe it or not the rats were the cleanest we have had in our house.

We had a guinea pig for 7 years! She was the greatest. she would lick your face and give you kisses. We now have a hamster. Yuck, they are a pain, they smell worse than guinea pigs and they are so noisey at night when you are trying to sleep. Get a guinea pig!

May I suggest another alternative for consideration? A friend of mine on another board has 4 chinchillas, and is always posting adorable and hilarious pics of them and talking about their cute and funny personalities. She's just about convinced me that I want some chinchillas. Apparently they're quite cuddly and playful.

In fact, just today, she posted a Quizilla quiz she made up which gives you some idea of her chin's personalities. It's a short one--go ahead and take it!

    C'mon--how cute are they?

I was thinking guinea pig for those same reasons. Bigger = easier to find and less chance of being stepped on. Less stinky = obvious reasons.

I couldn't do the mice or rats...can't handle the tail.....eek

Ooh, and I'd like one that squeaked!

I'd like to have a guinea pig, but we have too many animals now as it is.
    Maybe someday....

If you have to choose one of the three I would definitely choose the Guinea Pig. They are much more friendly than the other 2. I would suggest however getting a baby. If you do decide to get one just remember that Guinea Pigs do not produce their own Vitamin C which is absolutely essential for them. They need to be give fresh citrus (preferably oranges).

Now, if I might add another suggestion, for which everyone will think I am crazy. I would suggest a rat. Now just hear me out for a minute. I have raised many pet rats. I can tell you that they are very intellegent and actually quite friendly. I have always gotten rats as babies found that they are great pets, but they must be handled frequently to remain that way. Like any other pet if they aren't handled they don't trust humans touching them. The last rat we had just recently died. She was so smart, she even knew her name. We kept her cage in the living room and would call her name and she would come out of her box looking for us.
Just a suggestion, happy pet hunting.

I forgot to mention that part. Nobody ever believes me anyway, but it is true.

EEEWWW! I've had many pets, but no rodents. Dogs, cats (even though I don't like them, sometimes I still end up with them), lizards, ferrets (stinky but kind of cool, they sleep 23 hours a day and are crazy for an hour), birds, and snakes. The snake was easiest, the dogs are the most personable, and the birds were the noisiest.

    But a rodent, no way!

I am Kiki, the chinny diva. You're good natured in general, but hate any touch because it may mess up your fur. You're also able to kick the boy's butts if they give you trouble!

    Funny!
