Goofy, Illinois

  2. I have to make a confession. I do not, as my signature states, live in Anomaly Il. Actually, I reside in a rural area outside of Goofy, Il. Anomaly, which is immediately southeast of Goofy, is one of the largest towns in the area. If I say, "I live in Goofy", to people not from this area, they always ask, "Where's that?" "Just northwest of Anomaly", I respond. "Oh, yeah", they say, "I've heard about it", and walk away.

We who live in Goofy love the town, but are a little ashamed of its history. You see, the town was named after an old seadog, just because he smelled like an old wet dog, by the name of Ben Goofy. Ben Goofy was born on the eastern seaboard and ran away to sea at the tender age of 12. He immediately left the sea and returned to land when he found he couldn't get as far in water, walking.

Ben Goofy walked and eventually found his way west to Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St.Louis, sometime in the 1830's. Walking from the eastern seaboard is a long trip and Ben made quite a fortune picking up loose change dropped by the pioneers of the westward expansion.

Ben wanted to invest his fortune in and bought some land. Here is part of a newspaper article from that time. As you can see, Ben was quite a rich, good looking man:

Well, that didn't go as I had planned, as the picture couldn't be placed within the narrative.

That's ironic, because it seems that a lot of things didn't go as planned with Ben Goofy. Ben invested his money in land, started a town, but nothing happened. Nothing ever did, and nothing ever has happened in Goofy, Il. worthy of mentioning.

And, in essence, people believed Ben had goofed, buying land and starting a town where nothing happened.

Here is a portion of a newspaper article from the 1830's:

So, in summary, Ben was an old seadog, because he smelled like a wet dog, who had goofed.

The Goofy, Il. insignia honors him for this:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha, Farawyn!

You know, Farawyn, that basic concept has significant historical beginnings, right?

You know what reference was made when that concept was first used?

Back in the mid 1800's snapping a photograph took one to three minutes for an exposure to occur. During this exposure time, the subject needed to remain perfectly still. Typically during this point in history, photographs could be afforded only by the wealthy.

Ben Goofy, being a rather wealthy man, had his photograph taken. However, Mr. Goofy could not remain still for the one to for the exposure to take place. The lost photograph was found and, sadly, caused quite a sensation with negative repercussions:

Ben Goofy kind of resembles Alfred E Neuman, minus the goofy smile. "What, me worry?"
