Hi - working a night shift due to a nurse calling out sick. Had a woman come in saying "I'm having my baby" . . .I'm working acute . . ran down to help the nursing supervisor/ER nurse get the room ready . .. she was 9 1/2 cm . . . called the doc who fortunately lives less than a mile away . . .three pushes and out comes the baby. Whew! Back at the acute station . . .

    Night shift people snack alot . . . .

    Good morning!

Yep mgallant, I've feeling pretty odd from the shift change. But it's working better for me. I'm so sorry to hear about the student who died, that's awful.

Angie, all this stress from school is zapping your immunity because you can't seem to get well, not to mention stressing your back. I hope you start to feel better soon.

I'm going to have some oatmeal and fruit and head off to the gym.

I made an 84 on my dreadful chemistry test. My lowest grade yet, but a low B, and time to move on to the next. Only two more weeks left in this semester, but lots of work.

Good Morning All! I am taking a sick day today. My 6 year old woke me up at 5 this morning throwing up and had a fever of 104. My throat is pretty sore, so I guess were starting a new round of sickness. Its cool and rainy here. Guess we will just sleep today.

mgallant, so sorry about the loss of your student.!
Angie, hope you get to feeling better!
Tweety, 84 not bad for yucky chemistry! Better than I ever did!:uhoh21: Thank goodness its nearly over..........

Hope everyone has a good day!

Still trying to beat this Viral Respiratory Infection. No fever this morning, so I'll probably go to work tonight. Then I'll have two nights off to continue recovering.

Will be glad when we finally get some sunshine here. To make matters worse it has been either cloudy or rainy for two weeks.

I still haven't heard from Kaiser concerning the day job in Urology. But my current job wants me to stay, and wants me to go to day shift near the end of April. I really think I'll feel a whole lot better if I go to days and get off the night shift.

Tweety, was it hard for you to transition to days? How is your job going? Are you enjoying the fast pace? Online Science classes can be dreadful. They seem much more time consuming than when you actually go to the class on campus. I tried Micro online and had trouble keeping up. Soooo much homework!!! Yet 84 is very good, Tweety!

Mary, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your student.

Steph, I have worked the night shift for two years now, yes we do snack ALOT. I have gained 15 lbs since I started the night shift. UGH! As soon as I start working the day shift, I'm going to work on my health, it is in the pits right now. Eat healthy, walk more and ride my bike, and finally spend time with my husband.

Hope those who are feeling ill, will feel better soon, those who are stressed can relax some today and those who are sad can find a spark of joy.

    good morning everyone:melody:

well, the weather is finally improving!! chicago has sunshine!!
    this is a good thing!!

i worked last nite--not the best. i have worked nites for about 30 years--and this last year has been the worst that i remember. i don't know what is happening but i certainly don't remember ever getting so many nite time medical admissions!! oh well!! hopefully i will retire in a year or so.it's just that these old bones don't move as well as they used to especially with all my arthritis. i was also charge last nite, which you all know i hate.

i think i am charge again tonite. oh well, i'll be off tomorrow.

mary, i'm so sorry about your student. she, her family and you will be in my prayers.

tweety, i think that was a great grade for on-line chemistry!! i forgot to ask, how did the first weekend day-shift go? you do 12 hrs, don't you?

i hope you all have a wonderful day!!

    i'll see you all tomorrow!!

I hope that all the puny ones get well quick...nurses are not suppose to be sick

mary it is rough when someone on the cusp of life dies...you can see the potential that will never be realized

tweety don't beat yourself up..84 is a respectable score esp since you are just getting started on on-line classes...once you get the hang of it your scores will climb and your retention will increase also..which is the main thing

angie the 22nd is just around the corner...and when it gets here make taking care of yourself your #1 priorty

steph i know that a lot ofwomen wait until the last minute b/c they don't want to be send back home and feel silly...glad that baby was in good hands

Hello. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm not bothered by the grade, it's just a little humbing with a 98 average on the first three tests, to make that kind of grade. LOL But I'm at the stage in life where I can keep things in perspective and not be grade obessed. As I said, I'm moving on to the next thing. Less than 2 weeks and my first semester is over!

Hannas and Mary Ann, I allowed myself a vacation prior to switching to day shift so my body could handle the transition. As you know I wasn't one of the night shift workers that could switch from days to nights on my days off with ease. I'm feeling so much better, like a fog has been lifted. My blood pressure is good, I can get more things done. The floor is busy, but I've only had one shift where it was almost too overwhelming, the rest I've been lucky. So all in all have over 20 years of working evenings or nights I'm doing reasonably well on day shift. There's an exodus happening on night shift, as people are moving on, as they do in med-surg, and I'm praying she doesn't ask me to go back on nights. When I asked for day shift, I mentioned it was primarily for my health, so perhaps she won't.

Anyway, thanks for all the support.

    Hi Family !

I'm back.. just got in an hour or so ago.

I'm still sore, still woozy, and tired. Going to bed for awhile and will try to get back here later.

And never EVER give me percoset again ! They gave me just ONE in PACU for pain at the catheter insertion sites... I've never been so sick in my life ! Felt like I was on the worst drunk ever... that really SICK kinda drunk ! Poor Adam had to nearly carry me in from the car to our hotel room last night. :uhoh21:
That was embarrassing.. lots of ppl milling about outside too... I looked like a drunken wench.

Going to bed.. tummy still yukky.

mgallant.......so sorry about what happened to your student!! How sad for everyone involved.

Tweety.....day shift IS pretty overwhelming at times, isn't it? Sometimes I think it's twice as much work as nights.......seems like we get all the orders, surgeries, docs, families, 'suits', admissions, discharges etc. and then we earn less pay than the other shifts. However, at least we have something of a LIFE, so there's something to be said for that; besides, I personally stopped being able to handle nights once I got past 40, so for me there's really no other shift. I did love the 3-11 shift, but it no longer exists at my hospital.......since last September, there have been two 11A-7P "specialists" (one of whom is moi) who float from 11-3 doing admissions, post-ops, charge, etc. (sometimes in three or four different departments!) and then usually take a team from when the 7A-3P day shift goes home. It's busy, and sometimes when I come home at night I think "Oh man, I'm getting too old for this!!" But I've got the perfect schedule: Mon-Tues. on, Weds. off, Th-Fri. on, and all weekends off........so who's complaining? :chuckle

I feel considerably better today......no more fever, and my asthma is beginning to simmer down a bit thanks to Q 4 hour nebulizer tx at home. Thank God for this machine........it was purchased for my youngest child when he was a baby to minimize hospitalizations for asthma exacerbations, only HE hasn't used the thing in years, while his father and I have needed it more times than we can count. At least I'm pretty sure I'll make it to work tomorrow, which is the important thing!

Steph......good thing you were there when that mom walked in! I wish you could be there for my daughter when she has her baby......some of the nurses on the OB floor where I work leave something to be desired, and I know she'd be in good hands with you.

Today is actually pretty warm here in Western Oregon.......it's cloudy, but dry and very pleasant outside. I would like some sunshine though! Seems our seasons are bass-ackwards this year.......it was dry and warm from January through mid-March, and now it's cold and rainy most of the time. I know we need it, otherwise our electric and water bills will be sky-high this summer.....but dang, I'd love a couple of days like we had back in February when it was 72 (!) degrees and sunny.......I could actually get started on a tan.......yeah, yeah, I know it's not good for me, but I just HATE looking all pale and washed out like I do in the winter!! WAAAAAAAH!!!!!
