George Orwell would have been 100 years old today.

  1. When I read 1984 the year was far in the future. Now 19 years later we can still learn from its warning.

Just as one poster recommends "Atlas Shrugged"
I think reading fiction can teach us.

NewSpeak, perpetual war, revising history Hmmm?

I always think of newspeak when I hear the words we use in our political news. The buzzwords that have become our normal vocabulary (like WMD, coalition forces, rogue nations, regime change, and my personal favourite "AXIS OF EVIL"...) are a little wierd, and Orwellian at times....

I did not read 1984, but I did read Animal Farm in high school.

"If you are not with us, you are against us"
    Sounds Orwellian.......

the gulf between language and reality satirized by Orwell
    has become our everyday deal
    we expect deceit and deception
    and we accept the mantra
'but some pigs are more equal than others'
