Gastric Bypass

  1. Hello all,
This post is all Allnurse members whom have had Gastric Bypass surgery. I have qualified for this surgery thru Bariatric Treatment Centers, but my insurance won't pay. While I am fighting it out I want to know how your surgeries went, did you have any problems? How did you get your insurance to pay? Are you keeping the weight off? Just a few questions any replies are appreciated. I work in LTC and have no experience with people or patients whom had this surgery.

I haven't had it (i'm chicken), but a coworker recently had it. To answer a few questions. Did she keep it off? Too early to know, she's still loosing. She was a REAL big girl, though and now she looks great. Insurance? It was medically necessary..her weight was affecting her breathing, bp, etc. I know she had a few problems following the surgery..they typical risks. She had a bleed and later she had cholecystitis and some hypoglycemia. She's doing fine now, though.

Good luck! Keep me updated on your progress!!

My mother had the surgery about 18 years ago. She had the surgery because of associated medical problems. After the surgery she found that she digested things that at room temp would he liquid and things that were crispy most easily. Sadly this led to a lot of ice cream and chips type meals. She has corrected that since the early days, but she has never been able to digest much meat. Mostly has to chew it up and then spit it out. She takes several vitamins to make up for deficiencies in her diet. She also underwent a later surgery to remove a "fat apron" after she lost weight and then a abdominal hernia surgery. I believe that the insurance paid for her surgery because it became medically necessary. She did not seek out or volunteer for the surgery.
