free diet advice

  1. Okay, so there's a thread on another forum about the "fatting of America," with lot's of interesting and valid points, but it's really long and hurts my brain, and besides, I'm already fat enough.

    I suspect I'm like a lot of people in having tried a variety of diets that just don't work. So, I'm thinking, if we all posted diets we've tried that didn't work, others wouldn't need to try them.

    For example, when I was young, my mother always forbade me to have a cookie before dinner, because it would spoil my appetite. So, now, when spoiling my appetite would be a good thing, it makes sense that having a cookie, or a Snickers bar, before every meal should ruin my appetite and cause me to lose weight.
    My logic seems impeccable, but for reasons I can't quite determine, this plan has not been successful.

    Any other, equally good ideas that didn't pan out?

    the problem with this is that what doesn't work for one may be just the right thing for someone else.

    [color=#483d8b]if there were one perfect way to lose weight, there would be very few obese people left . i lost almost 100 lbs. using weight watchers, my brain, and lots of exercise. there was a lot of determination, sweat, and tears involved. that may not work for a lot of others. some want it a little easier. some may be willing to work even harder than i did.
    [color=#483d8b]
    [color=#483d8b]it boils down to a whole lot of common sense and good nutrition. take in less calories, make those calories count nutritionally. and for goodness sakes, move more. if depression is a key, address the depression. get therapy. i got a divorce . besides my full time rn job, i now work pt for weight watchers. does that mean i'm going to force that down everyone's throat? nope. i sincerely believe that everyone needs to do what's best for them. i did. i tried other program's, other diets. i even contemplated lap band surgery at one point.
    [color=#483d8b]
    [color=#483d8b]in the end, i made a choice and gave it my all. thank goodness it worked. i truly believe that i made it work. i support those in their weght loss endeavors, no matter what they are, well unless something crazy like eating only egg yolks for 7 days then hot dogs for 7 days, etc .

    Wow - that's impressive!

    I'm with nursemike - I can't lose weight easily anymore. Of course, I'm thinking if my computer were somehow hooked up to my treadmill than maybe it would work!??

    Okay, so...egg yolks for seven days, then hot dogs for seven days...sounds worth a shot. I've contemplated that treadmill idea for years--before the internet, a plain old t.v. would have worked.

    One thing that actually did work for me was working in McDonald's. It was two miles from my home and I had no car, so I got lots of exercise, and I had almost no desire for a Quarter Pounder. But there were other disagreeable side effects.

    Congratulation, CAS. Yes, it is really a pretty simple equation, but not the easiest thing to implement. What is beginning to annoy me is the thought that I have spent decades trying to lose weight, and probably once I solve it, I'll probably die a week later of something totally unrelated.

    thanks. you're right about it not being easy to implement. you know what? i think it happens not with the right "plan" or "program" but when you're really ,truly ready. something inside you just has to click.

    [color=#483d8b]maybe your time is just around the corner.:smiletea2:
    [color=#483d8b]i know that i've battled extra weight in the past, 20,25 lbs but never 100. that was enough shock for me. it was my personal wake up call. my dad died at 40 of a massive mi and he was "only" 10-15 lbs overweight. i'm not much younger than he was when he died!
    [color=#483d8b]i ain't ready to go yet! so hopefully, i'm prolonging my life, i sure hope fate isn't cruel and i get hit by a bus, ack!

    i hear what you're saying about how much harder it is to lose weight as one gets older. although i must say that when i was pushing 40 myself a decade ago, shedding pounds was a snap compared with the way it is now that i'm nearing the half-century mark. back then, i could drop 10 pounds in a week if i really buckled down; nowadays, it takes a month or more to lose the same amount, whether or not i'm 'working' at it (and i've lost 35# over the past few months without dieting).

    then again, in my 20s i'd lose 10 pounds in a week just by cutting out desserts and soda pop.

    congratulations to you for losing so much weight!! what a wonderful gift to give yourself and your loved ones........you have a lot to be proud of!:kiss

    please accept my condolences on the loss of your beloved furbaby.

    a few years ago, my sweet chrissie anne many-toes, who had been with our family since my now-24-year-old daughter was a preschooler, had to be put down due to kidney failure. i still don't know why, but i cried like i'd never cried since i was small---i brought her body home afterward and sat on the sofa, just holding her and bawling like a baby for hours.

    i'm sorry for your loss. just know that your friend is well and happy again, and she's waiting for you beyond the rainbow bridge.:angel2:
