Freakin out here!!!!!!!

  1. I got the results of my recent blood test from my physical. Apperently I have high Cholesterol. I am 28 yrs old. I am really freaked out. All they sent me was a list of stuff not to eat.Well that doesn't help me understand it . I am not far enough in school to really understand what exactlly it is. Can it be reversed by eating less choleterol or only slowed down from getting worse? I will take any information or recomendations since I have no clue as to what to do!!!! Thanks guys!!!

I have very low cholesterol from eating a lot of fruits and veggies and healthy fats like olive oil.

Cholestorol can definately be controlled through diet and exercise. Simply increasing your fiber intake by adding just a few more whole veggies and fruits can make a world of difference.

How high is it? What type of diet do you eat. The "typical standard American diet" is full of saturated fat and cholestorol.

But then you have Dr. Adkins confusing the matter saying just lower your carbs and forget about the rest. sigh...

Thanks 3rd shift guy!!!!! My total cholesterol is 237. LDL is 51. HDL is 166. Triglyceride level is 96. This could be russian. I haven't a clue! I do unfortunatly eat the" typical standard american diet" Now I am scare dto eat anything. Maybe this will make me lose some of the weight I need to lose...............blehh

That is not to bad. Some simple (yeah right) lifestyle changes will help tremendously.

I read somewhere that just eating a couple of fresh carrots every day lowers cholestorol, or a bannana (but those are evil carbs, gasp). But I think the main point being that fresh fruits and veggies (which are cholestorol free, and full of fiber) help.

    Loosing weight will definately help.

Let this be your wake up call. (I've had to have a few of those too). Don't be like my friend, who ignored all advice and had his first heart attack at age 40. Then decided to do something about it.

    Good luck!!!

Thers nothing evil about carbs folks. They are what fuel you and make you NOT HUNGRY. Do not listen to the no carb nay sayers! Starving yourself is not a weight loss plan.
High fiber, low fat, increase your activity level. Get i hours worth of modrate exercise every day9 working up a sweat is the key- a 3 mile walk)
Listen- High cholesterol and trigylcerides= heart disease. I had my last child at 38. I was chunky before and fat after. My total cholesterol was 203. my doc said "do not worry". Horseshit! I went to Weight watchers, lost 33 lbs in 8 mos and dropped my cholesterol to 133! Ive kept it off 4 four years.
And it felt good! You can do, too. I'm just regular folks. And all my elders had heart disease

Do you smoke? Does anyone in your family have high cholestrol?

Carbs feed your brain....what can be bad about that?

I'm agreeing with the carb-eaters. The answer is: MODERATION in ALL things.

Losing weight and exercising is *probably* the only thing you need to do to bring down your cholesterol. I always remember the "good cholesterol" from the "bad cholesterol" this way: LDLs = "Lethal" cholesterol (the bad stuff). HDLs = "Healthy" cholesterols (the good stuff). In your total cholesterol count, you want low LDLs and higher HDLs.

There are some people out there who are genetically predisposed to high cholesterol despite all efforts at reducing. Hopefully you're not one of them and you just need to modify your eating and exercising patterns--like many Americans! (I say this after stuffing myself over the holidays *sigh*--back on the wagon Jan. 2nd!).

Good luck and keep us posted.

don't forget the value of OMEGA FATS (good fats) and their ability to lower "bad" cholesterol and raise "good" cholesterol numbers. These can be found in fish , seeds, nuts, flax oil, etc. VERY important, in addition to complex carb intake.

We touched on low fat diets in my masters program. There is a slew of people who did low fat diets who are paying the price with high cholestrol. Research suggests if you stay on a low fat diet to long, several years, your body does not get enough EFAs. If you couple that with to many carbs you stimulate an elevation of insulin in your body which has been associated with increased cholestrol levels and heart disease. I know this to be true as I had this problem. Takes awhile to get the cholestrol level down.

Make sure your getting your OMEGA 3 EFA and don't overdo on the carbs especially the simple carbs.

Well now I know why I was so confused . The doctors office mixed the numbers up. My hdl is 51, and my ldl is 166. Now that makes more sence to me.........ugh. Still sucks though. I ate no cholesterol today....yippe.I hope this works good for me over all.!!!!!!!Thanks everyone for all ther great advice!

    Hidi, # 1:Keep it simple.
    # 2 The vegie, carb,Atkins thing is a whole other thread...and it was a good one
#3 Do excercise. You DO NOT have to go nuts. Start with taking the stairs at work, by walking 20" a day. You'll be surprised at how it starts to make a difference in how you feel.
#4 Do change your eating habits, but don't go overboard so that you can't live with it. Lose McD's, and most fast foods, but if you do eat out...choose carefully.
#5 Increase the veggies, fiber and fruits in your diet....but remember...even the American Diabetes Assoc. recommends counting carbs.
#6 Do your research. Make your OWN choices about what works best for you. There is alot of information available to you in the library, the book store and the internet.
#7 Come here and tell us how you are doing!!! Guarantee that someone cares, and definetly has an opinion!!!!
