For all you domestic goddesses out there.....

  1. Ok, for all you domestic goddesses out there.....
How do you clean an iron?

I keep getting this brownish stuff coming out whenever I put water in my iron for steam. I don't want to ruin a perfectly good iron by trying it on my own.

So, any advice? I know there are just tons and tons of you out there that are not domestically challenged like I am!

Ummmm... I am ashamed to admit that I buy a new one when the old one gets yucky or gets guck melted on it.

use vinegar to clean it....put vinegar in the resevoir(sp?)..and tilt it son an old towel so it steams through with vinegar steam...use qtips if needed also...and switch to distilled h2o and youwon't have to do this again...

Try this site, how to clean the inside and outside of your iron.

    http://www.hgtv.com/HGTV/project/0,1..._19642,00.html

It may save you the expense of getting a new iron.

I use the cleaners, don't iron, haven't seen one in years, but probably would chuck it, and only use distilled h2o in the new one.

Walmart sells iron cleaner in little tubes. It's in the dept where the irons are sold and it works great!! I just got some the other day!

My iron cost under $10...so I would just pitch it if it got gross! Especially during back to school time for college students there's always good sales :chuckle

What is this "iron" you speak of? If it's not at least a poly-cotton blend, it ain't coming off the rack at the store .

The other day, my mother held up one of my "100% cotton" scrub tops and said "if you bring another top that needs to be ironed into this house, you are dead meat". I just laughed at her because the top she was holding up was the one she bought for me for my last birthday.
