Florida nurses and nursing students?

  1. I guess I'm kind of a newbie to Florida...though I have been here two years. I have been thinking at times of moving back up north, but there are some definite pluses for living down here.

I live on the West Coast between Sarasota and St. Pete. It seems as though working in the health field is the past way to go, as there many opportunities to work in different areas of nursing.

Hope to hear from a few of you!! For established nurses, it'll be great to have some mentors to talk with who have gone through a lot of the training already and for fellow nurses to be, we can learn together, right?

I'm a little confused......what is it you want to know? I'm not a huge Fla fan myself, I prefer the SW.

I would like to know which nurses/nurses-to-be on the BB are living in Florida. I'm originally from NY, and moved down here to be closer to my mom and to go back to school. I just would like to chat with others from this area.

I am also originally from NYS, now in Fla. No WAY I'm going back to NYS!

So where in NY did you live? I'm originally from Long Island.

    Whereabout Florida are you?

I live near you. The area is a bit depressed pay scale wise compared to the rest of the state and compared to even Tampa., but especially behind the country.

But it was sunny and warm today, the beaches are gorgeous. There is no state tax, and property costs less. The same kinds of nursing opportunities that you find anywhere are here on the west central coast of Florida.

    I love it here.

Hi Thirdshiftguy! I've got to agree with the amenities of the west coast. Living only 15 minutes from the beach, it is always a pleasure to go out to the island and sit by the beach.

I also agree with the rate of pay...yeesh! But at least in this area, there seems to be a wider choice of what kind of nurse you would like to be. It doesn't seem to be just retires any more. We are having more and more young people and families moving down. Although we don't have the state taxes and all, I am amazed at how expensive real estate is getting to be. In that regards, it is getting as expensive as in other parts of the country, including NY.

welcome 2banurse,,,, kris i live in the northwest panhandle of floriday,,,, pay is awful,,,, in comparison to anywhere,,,,

i visit my sister,,, outside of ft. lauderdale,, look in paper,, the jobs seem abundant,,, pay much better (by no means great, but more than area i'm in ),,,, but~ the grass isn't always greener,,,,,

i too, came from the north,,, pittsburg pa,,, moved here 20 years ago,,,, looking to relocate to desert sw,,,,, soon,,, sooner than later i hope,,,,

in this area we have couple of small hospitals,,, pay is not even worth mentioning,,, lots of skilled nursing facities,,,, i am director of nursing for an assissted living facility,,,,,,

truthfully in this area,,, if you want the most money,,, job security,, skilled nursing is your option,,,,,

we have the gulf,,, which is beautiful,,,, no comparision to the atlantic,,, but we also have the cold wet weather in winter,,, two days later hot and humid!

to be fair,,, this is mostly toursist city,,, & jobs,, pay,,, conditions probably better in tallahassee which is < two hours away,,,,,,

    nice to meet you,,,,,

    happy holidays ~kitamoon

happy holidays back to you, kitamoon! i, too, live closer to the gulf (15 min by car) and i prefer it!

i had thought about moving back to ny, but last spring my mom was dx'd with br. cancer. since then, she has been doing well, and i've been getting a little more settled, having made some nice friends.

the one thing i'm not too worried about is that when it comes to nursing jobs, there is a wide range of opportunities. we are experiencing major growth (maybe a little to fast!) in all population areas.

i look forward to when i am feeling better (recent dx of pneumonia) and can go back outside.

have a happy holiday and look forward to hearing from you again!
