Firemans's Strike (UK). Nursing related story

  1. As you may be aware, we have been enduring a series of strikes by our firefighters here in the United Kingdom. This story appeared in a British newspaper (The Independent) on Saturday November 23rd.

The firemens strike is well under way and...

"In Portsmouth (UK), a Green Goddess, a red fire engine, an ambulance and a police car turned up when a pensioner accidentally set fire to himself by dropping a cigarette down his trousers, which set his colostomy bag alight.

A shop worker doused the flames by throwing a cup of water over the fire. The victim was treated in hospital for minor burns. An Army spokesman said the cigarette had ignited methane in the bag."

You couldn't make up a story like that.

A note for our American friends: a "Green Godess" is the term used to describe the fire engines - most of them about 50 years old - used by the British Army, who have been providing cover whilst the firemen are on strike.

Basically for more pay, LV. Their maximum after 5 years is around 21000:00 ($33000:00 ?) which is a little more than a staff nurses' pay.

I can't blame them then. Our firefighters are making $65,000 to $70,000 a year here. GREAT pay and benefits up the whazoo.

Yup, it's true, verified by relatives I have in Portsmouth. Yes, I agree, it is kind of sad but it brightened up an otherwise grim day on the ward.
