  1. What are your favorite song lyrics? There is some good stuff out there. Tell me the lyric and song/artist it's from, since there is a lot of old stuff out there that's before my time and I probably won't know it!

    Here's mine (sorry, it's all Blink-182)

"You make me nervous, so I really can't eat" First Date

"Buy hope, hope that it lasts
    Give in, forget the past
Be strong when things fall apart
Honest, this breaks my heart" Please Take me Home

There are more, but I shouldn't say them on here. Let me know what you like!!

Actually mine isn't a lyric from a song, but from a movie:
    Men in Black

    "You're useless Beatrice!"

I'm old, so it's an old song. Billy Joel, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"...

Brenda and Eddie were the popular steadies
And the king and the queen of the prom
Riding around with the car top down and the radio on
    Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive.

Brenda and Eddie were still going steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would be at the end of July
    Everyone said they were crazy
"Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that kind of life."
But there we were wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye.

They got an apartment with deep pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought with the bread
They had saved for a couple of years
They started to fight when the money got tight
And they just didn't count on the tears.

They lived for a while in a very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter of course
And they parted the closest of friends
Then the king and the queen went back to the green
But you can never go back there again.

Brenda and Eddie had had it already
    By the summer of '75
From the high to the low
To the end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to the greasers
The best they could do was pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both find a way to get by
That's all I heard about Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more than I told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda and Eddie goodbye.

courtesy of some Billy Joel discography site, from "the stranger" album.

I think of this song when I see kids (teens) rushing into sex, babies, marriage and other adult thrills and by the time they are 19...they've had it...from the "high to the low; To the end of the the show: For the rest of their lives." Of course, they go on, dragging their past with them.

"I take off my watch and my earrings
    My bracelets and everything
Lie on my back and moan at the ceiling
    Oh my baby "

Luncinda Williams from "Right in Time" , from the grammy winning Carwheels on a Gravel Road.
Lucinda is righteous. Go see her, she is on tour and rocks.

I tend to like fairly cynical song lyrics, 'cause I'm sick like that.

Alanis Morrissette's "You Oughta Know" is brilliant.

Don Henley writes some great ones, too. From "Dirty Laundry":

See the bubble-headed bleached blonde who comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
    It's interesting when people die
    Give us dirty laundry

And from his new album, Inside Job:

    It's like there's
Nobody else in the world but you
    In case you hadn't noticed
There are lots of other people here, too

I like the funny ones, too. Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" never fails to crack me up.

One of my favorites is No Doubts I'm just a Girl

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
    I'm exposed
    And it's no big surprise
    Don't you think I know
    Exactly where I stand
    This world is forcing me
    To hold your hand

'Cause I'm just a girl, little ol' me
Don't let me out of your sight
I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
Oh... I've had it up to here!

The moment that I step outside
    So many reasons
For me to run and hide
I can't do the little things
    I hold so dear
'Cause it's all those little things
    That I fear

    'Cause I'm just a girl,
    I'd rather not be
'Cause they won't let me drive
    Late at night
    I'm just a girl,
Guess I'm some kind of freak
'Cause they all sit and stare
    With their eyes
    I'm just a girl,
Take a good look at me
    Just your typical prototype
Oh... I've had it up to here!
Oh... am I making myself clear?

    I'm just a girl
I'm just a girl in the world...
That's all that you'll let me be!

I'm just a girl, living in captivity
    Your rule of thumb
    Makes me worry some
    I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
    What I've succumbed to
    Is making me numb
I'm just a girl, my apologies
What I've become is so burdensome
I'm just a girl, lucky me
    Twiddle-dum there's no comparison

Another Billy Joel fan. I am a member of the Rock and Roll can save the World generation. So, there are a lot of lyrics I love.
From The Stranger LP "She's always a Woman to me."
From Nylon Curtain "They counted our rotors and waited for us to arrive."
From Storm Front "Tell my wife I still have my hand on the wheel"
Blood Sweat and Tears "I swear there ain't no heaven, I pray there ain't no Hell"
The Beatles "Why don't we do it in the road"
Dylan "But he can't be a man, cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me."
There's more, but at 5am these are all I can come up with. Gary

" Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage"

tell me I have nothing to do"

Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I'm being used
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that's what really hurt

The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none in my eyes you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes my love you didn't need to coax
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried any more
You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover and
mother what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed
and in the morning kick me in the head
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore
You lured me away from home 'cause you didn't want to be alone
You stole my heart I couldn't leave you if I tried

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of playing pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand
Oh Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart but I love you anyway

Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home one of these days

everytime I hear this song brings me back to my college days
