HOUSTON -- A doctor was killed Saturday when an elevator malfunctioned and decapitated him at a downtown Houston hospital.

Thirty-five-year-old Hitoshi Nikaidoh of Dallas was a surgical resident at Christus St. Joseph Hospital.

Harris County Medical Examiner investigator Harold Jordan says Nikaidoh was stepping onto a second-floor elevator when the elevator's doors closed and pinned his shoulders.

He says the elevator car moved upward and cut the doctor's head.

Police say a female hospital worker on the elevator witnessed

the accident and was trapped on the elevator for 15 or 20 minutes before firefighters were able to remove her.

Police are investigating what caused the accident, and hospital officials have since closed the elevator bank.

Maintenance crews have been working on the elevators during the past week.

The stairs are looking better everyday. Too bad it just about puts me into cardiac arrest every time I climb 6 flights. I really should take the steps more often or get a job on the 1st floor.
