Efforts to Find Miners Become Desperate

  1. TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Rescuers pushed deeper into a mine shaft in a desperate search for 13 trapped coal miners Tuesday, but the prospects of finding anyone alive appeared bleak after holes drilled into the ground yielded deadly levels of carbon monoxide and no signs of life.
The men, trapped 260 feet down by an explosion Monday morning in the Sago Mine, were believed to be about 12,000 feet past the opening of the shaft. By early evening, about 35 hours after the blast, rescue teams had penetrated 11,400 feet, working their way on foot for fear machinery might cause volatile gases to explode.

A fourth of my family work as coal miners in WVA (not at this mine though). This is really hitting home.

I can't imagine what their families are going through.

They are in my prayers. Hopefully, they have managed to survive and this terrible situation will have a happy ending.

I haven't lost hope. The man in the article was right about the air meters being wrong.

Families Are Told Body Found in W.Va. Mine
The unidentified body was found about 700 feet from a mine car, and it appeared the employee was working on a beltline, which brings coal out of the mine, said Ben Hatfield, chief executive officer for the mine's owner, International Coal Group Inc.

The first miner to be taken to the hospital is in critical condition. I pray that they all make it through this, it sure would be terrible to loose any of them at this point.
My thoughts are with the miners family who was not found alive

I'm watching CNN live tonight about the miners...they had this "nurse" from the ER interviewing her on the phone. She was giving a blow by blow of what the hosptail staff was doing for them. Isn't there some laws about that?

The CEO of the Hosp. now saying that only 1 is alive! This woman is saying that there is fist fights breaking out.

Not the CEO of the hosp. but the CEO of the mine company.
