Do you color your own hair, or go to the salon?

  1. I'm sitting here, with a frosting cap on my head, smelling up the house with hair dye, wondering if I have just made a big mistake. I've been a bottle blond for more than 15 years, and have gotten sick of having to dye my roots so frequently. So I decided to "low light" my hair to blend it with my natural color, so it's not a big change all at once. I want to eventually have my natural color, and just highlight.

I went to the salon to have it done a month ago, and the color didn't come out dark enough, so I thought if I did it myself, (it looked easy enough), I could save some money.

Has anyone else ever tried this? What were your results? Any good hair stories?

I've got 10 more minutes with the dye, then I have to condition, and I'll let you all know how it comes out.

I've highlighted my own hair with a cap once. Turned out fine. I just don't prefer to do it myself. I mean, why? If I had to pay for it maybe. My MIL does mine (barber/stylist)

I would think it would be easier to low light with dye that highlight with bleach.... in terms of how precise it has to be, when the color takes and all.....

    Let us know!

I don't highlight, but I do color my own hair. Wish I could help ya out more with some great story, the only story I have is when I colored my hair really dark after being a sandy brown color, everyone hated it. So I tried dyeing again (the next day), it turned pink, so I called the company and did what they said, TWICE! Each time it got pinker and I called my SIL who was a hairdresser she told me what to do and it turned a normal shade own hair color that I was originally trying to get rid of! LOL Of course the ironic part is my haircolor now is the dark color everyone originally hated...I get more compliments on it now!

I use henna sometimes. Really yucky (smells like spinach and you have to leave it on 3 hours) but everything else makes my scalp break out. And the color looks nice.

I've always colored AND highlighted my own hair. Highlight every 4 months or so just to give the color more dimension--all-one-color hair looks very flat and unnatural to me.

Yep, do my own...I have too much hair to pay someone to do it, so I learned (and have made a few scary mistakes ) and always remember that it can be fixed if I really do something weird :chuckle I also like to cut and color other people's hair too...think I missed my calling!

I'm sure yours will turn out fine! ...dontcha love the conditioner you get with coloring?!

Ok, the results are looks better than I expected. I was afraid it would come out patchy, but it actually blends together pretty well. It may take some getting used to when I look in the mirror, because it's much darker. But I think I like it.......

Now, here is a problem that did arise. I've never had a problem with the blond dye staining my hands. But, the brown dye apparently does. I got it on my fingers when I rinsed, and now it looks like I've been gardening. The fingernails on my left hand are stained and grungy looking. Ewwww!

Anyone know how to remove it, or how long it takes to wear off? Definately can't go to clinicals like that next week!

Wash your hands w/ Tide or Cascade.....something strong....use a nail scrubber thing and get under your nails. Works everytime for me. You can even soak your hands in a water soap bath for a few minutes to soften it up a little! Good luck!

I dyed my hair for years, but stopped when I started getting inconsistent results (subtle greenish hues). I've been going to a salon for the last six years. I'm not even sure what my real color is anymore.
