Disrespectful Students and what to do about them.....

  1. I am taking a First Aid Class and our instructor could not be in class today(his sister is very ill and they have given her 2 weeks to live) so he had another instructor bring in a video for us to watch.....we were to take notes on the video and turn them in on Tuesday when we went back to class. About 20 minutes into the video these "students" started talking and cutting up(the class is divided...1/2 younger, 1/2 older) and being very loud so that we could not hear the video that we were supossed to be taking notes on. I turned around and said, "Hey guys, some of us are trying to hear this video." Of course it went pretty silent I guess because they couldn't believe someone said something to them.....well another 15 minutes or so pass and they are starting to get really loud again so another student did the "SSSSHHH" thing and one of them popped off SSSH to you.......pissed me off and her too because she said, " Hey I want to hear.....about the same time I said.....We are trying to listen if you don't want to listen then leave!" Well....they left....about 1/2 the class did at that point and these 4 or 5 BIG ol boys mouthed the whole way out.....we'll leave damn it...you can listen to this crap...so on....I very nicely waved and said BYE NOW.....Have fun........

With that story in mind....what would you have done? I was furious with the behavior exhibited. We did not have a teacher in there so.......I did write down everyone who was there at the end and I went and spoke to the instructor that came in and told us what we were going to do......he was very unhappy and said he was going to speak to our instructor, but I plan on going in and seeing him before class on Tuesday....by God I stayed and those who didn't aren't going to get a grade for work they didn't do......any comments appreciated......

Always irritates me when I have to do the teacher's job. BUT I'll do it with the money I spend on tuition!

robin, i'm curious as to what age group was making the most noise? was it mixed between older and younger?

i agree it was rude no matter what

No, It was the younger students.....between ages 18-24 or so. They all sit in back....theres a group of older that sit towards the front...27-50 and in the front are a couple of younger students about 22 or so that WANTED to hear also and were mad as well....

And to think that between ages 18-24, I was mature enough not to behave that way. Heck, at their ages, I was married and a mother of two already....with #3 tucked away safely in my womb. :chuckle

I agree that you should turn them in to who ever is in charge so that doesn't happen again. I'm sure they thought that the class would be just fine without an instructor just to watch a video......being that the class happens to be an ALL ADULT class!...for heaven's sake.

I am an adult and they are in college.....the behavior was wrong....they should not have acted that way and certainly should not have mouthed in that manner......I will speak to the instructor....never fear

Robin, I think that is the right thing to do.

i was curious of the ages too.

some who are in their twenties and some younger and some older are not excluded, but in classes that i have been in, it is usually the 30 years old and younger students who still have not "found" themselves and sometimes do things to impress others or just haven't learned yet when to "fold" and when to "hold" their behavior/emotions, etc.

i would let it be known, since there are those who want to listen and learn, this part of the class would appreciate it if others would at least limit if not decease the noise so others who want to, may hear and learn.

Gawd. I hate students like that. So immature. Grow the f up if you're gonna be a health care provider. Otherwise, please spare us and go apply at McDonald's. I'm sure they're hiring!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, it can be an immature age group. But I consider myself to be an exception to it, so I hope this thread doesn't get caught up in the age issue, I don't see why it even matters.

The seriousness and dedication required to continue on into the nursing program will get the best of those not mature and ready enough to handle it.

You asked what we would do in a similar situation. I'd get my nose about three inches from the nose of the ring leader and calmly explain that I had paid to attend this class, and if he/she wasn't quiet, I'd use his/her own vocal cords to restrain his/her tongue. But then, I'm 6'4", and weigh about 275. My approach might not work for everyone.

Yes Heather that is why I pointed out that there were a couple of kids about 22 who WANTED to be there and take their notes.....
This is not a class that is required for my degree plan.....I need it for a filler class, and that is what alot of people use it for, BUT we get CPR cert and learn good info that may come in handy some day........I won't tolerate this behavior and KC I was almost scared to say anything because these were not little boys that were doing this......
