Dinky Doodle has diabetes

  2. My little JRT Dinky Doodle was diagnosed with diabetes yesterday, and started on insulin. She is about 10 years old and was too fat She started drinking like a fiend, and whizzing much more than normal, so we thought we knew what it was when we took her to the vet yesterday. Her blood sugar was over 500. Has anyone else ever had a dog that was diabetic, and can you offer any hints?

I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. I would be very interested to know how they treat dogs with DM. Please tell me more???? I am sending good thoughts and prayers because I know how much a furry baby can mean to us as I have two of my own. It's one year this month since my presious grandma doggie had to be put to sleep and the pain in my heart still feels the loss. God bless.

I quit doing care plans when I retired Russell. We have to do paw sticks q.d., she gets 5 U BID, and is now eating fit and trim, which they should make for fat guys like me. She seems to be adjusting to it OK. She is a very good dog who is well-behaved, and doen't seem to mind the shots at all.

I've honestly never heard of such a thing. I'm sorry your baby isn't well. She must be such a brave girl! (but then again, I think all diabetics are brave, as I don't think I could manage)

    Seriously though, paw sticks?

Actually we have to stick her on the side of the paw so it won't hurt when she walks. Thanks Sunny, I will research this. I don't think it is a whole lot different than a person.

Awwww poor dinky doodle! She is cute Jon! Is she a chihuahua (I have no idea how to spell that!) And she is only ten? I think with the TLC you will give her, she will do well.

The surprising thing I found out about dogs is that they're labs and treatments are so much like humans. I was surprised when ginger, my former dog, had diarrhea really bad, the vet re-hydrated her and told us to use kaopectate! Weight-based. Only think I know that isn't like humans is not to give animals aspirin, esp cats, but I don't know why.

I'd give her a wee bit more protein and less carbs, so lowfat cheese cubes instead of bisquits for treats, stuff like that. Sounds like sunny's links will help. I swear she is our animal expert researcher here!

Give dinky doodles a kiss from me! :kiss
