Concealed Carry Permits

  1. We were discussing tonight in the ICU how many nurses carry guns and how many actually have a Concelaed Carry Permit. So I was wondering how many out here have a concealed carry permit and if so how often do you carry and what do you carry? As for me I carry all the time and I mostly carry a Beretta PX4 Storm .45 SD. If I am not carrying that I carry a .38 S&W Police Chief Special.

Hopefully not at work... almost all health care facilities (and most other jobs) have very strict policies against weapon possession on the campus.

Yeah...I love those signs..."Such-and-such-a-place legally bans guns from these premises."

Translation: "Come on in criminals...we don't have any guns!"

    Filled with rage then
Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired
    Before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor
    The crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words

    [Chorus]
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

I don't agree with concealed carry laws. While I put my asbestos suit on I am going to state for the record that I own guns and like to hunt. I don't believe that concealed carry makes society safer.

I completely agree with Viking on this issue. Guns are great, but can be misconstrued. I have personally seen the negative effects of the concealed carry law in my area; however, I am both for and against it. Many people feel that if they are armed, then no one will do any thing to them, or that they can take the law into their own hands (neither of which are true!). Most of those people who do carry, couldn't hit the broad side of the barn (when no one is shooting at them), and if they could, it would take them an entire mag to do so. (Not to fire people up, but if someone is shooting at me I would try to take cover before firing back.) Personal opinion, as is the rest of this post, those CC classes do not allow for enough time for range practice, and are rigged because they place the participant in a "safe" environment.

Sorry for the rant, but I have seen some negative repercussions of CC. Argh... people are dumb, just look in the ER!:trout:

Riiiight. Or maybe more like "We won't shoot you for reaching for your wallet".

If I wanted to carry a weapon everywhere I went, I'd have been a cop.

I've held a concealed weapons permit since 2000. My little snub-nosed .38 lives in my car's glove box, and believe me, there were times I was glad I had it when I'd pull into the hospital parking lot at 2245 and see a batch of scary-looking characters milling around the ER. Never had to use it---heck, I've never even taken it out of the glove box except to clean it---but I think of it along the lines of "it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".

    Donning my asbestos suit........

No asbestos necessary. I grew up in a home with guns and know they can be safely handled by people who are properly trained. My father was an expert marksman who taught us to respect weapons.

I have 2 friends who are law enforcement officers with concealed carry permits. I like having them around.

Gosh - I have typed and re-typed this and oh boy here it goes:

I see no reason to carry a concealed gun. If you lead a lifestyle where you might use it, you probably need to change it. Few folks other than law enforcement could hit what they were aiming for. For the most part, folks that get shot by guns are the innocent bystanders and family members of those with guns in their households and cars!

Having worked in an inner city ER for 10 years, getting off at 0315 and walking 1/2 mile to the parking deck, I still didn't worry. I've SEEN some scary folks but you know you have confident body language, no purse and you're wearing scrubs, I just haven't been bothered.

Another thing, if your gun is concealed say in your car and you approach a group of suspicious folks what do you do? Tell them you'd like to get your gun from the car? Or do you carry it out and about aiming it indiscrimately at everyone that meets your standards?

I think we have to be the voice of reason here - the US has the highest gun ownership per capita in the world. An yet, our crime statistics are out of this world too.

I do have a permit, and yes, I do carry a .38 with me. It has nothing to do with the lifestyle that I live, but the lifestyle that some other people choose to live. My husband is away from home working a lot of the time, and I choose to protect myself. This may not be the right choice for others, but it is what I am comfortable with. I have been trained, and yes, I am pretty good at hitting the target. I hope that I never have to use it, but if I do it is nice to know that it is there.
