Pullizer prize winning author Carol Shields died yesterday of breast cancer. She was the author of such wonderful novels as The Stone Diaries, The Republic of Love, Larry's Party, and most recently Unless.
She was one of my favorite authors and I have the pleasure of living in the city that was portrayed in so many of her novels. My favorite or her has to be Republic of Love, a book full of lush descriptions of the River Heights neighborhood where my sister now lives.
I met Carol Shields in 1995, when she was lecturing at the University of Manitoba, where I was a nursing student. She was such a warm person, I remember.
