Can you recommend a good stethoscope?

  1. Hi everyone,
I am new to this board and would like to say hello to all of you!

I will be starting nursing school this fall and was wondering what brand and model of stethoscope would be good for me to use. And can you tell me why you like the particular brand/model of stethoscope you use? What makes it the best in you opinion? If you can make a suggestion I would appreciate it. Thank you for any help you can give me in my decision to purchase a stethoscope!

Well, Littmann is an excellent stethoscope! They are of great quality & have super warranties. However, they are pricey! Truth be told, I wouldn't buy one for nursing school. Several people in my class lost their stethoscopes during clinicals. What happens is - a well-meaning doctor or other staff member "borrows" it to use & forgets to give it back or sets it down in a different place. Once in my final semester, my preceptor & I were giving report to an oncoming nurse (who was an agency nurse, not a regular hospital employee) when I realized she had my stethoscope around her neck! When we finished, I asked to have it back & she complained that she had "already cleaned it" before returning it.

Don't buy the really cheap ones. You can get a good stethoscope for a reasonable price. I actually bought a Prestige Medical Stethoscope & BP cuff. It cost around $28 for the set & held up nicely all 2 years! (I received a Littmann as a graduation present!)

    Good Luck!

Hello and welcome to our bb,

I have been an RN for 4 years now and wouldn't use any other stethoscope but a Littmann. I purchased a Master Classic II. It cost me 75 bucks but the sound quality is well worth the price.

Stethoscopes walk no matter what kind it is whether it is a 10 dollar cheapie or a 150 dollar Littmann. I keep my scope in my possession at ALL times. I will let doctors borrow it or colleagues but I make sure that it is returned.

For clinicals I would recommend the Littmann Classic II SE. It comes in lots of colors and runs about 55 to 60 bucks. The cheapest place to get Littmanns is at Redding Medical Supply. They have a website which I think is

    Good Luck!

Any of you guys had experience with the MDF 747XP model? It is said to be identical to the 777 MD One model, but I have doubts as the 777 is stainless steel and the 747XP chestpiece is made of aluminium-brass...

I find I hear heart and lung sounds as well with an inexpensive Sprague type as with my Littman cardioscope. I loke the double tubing.
