I'm sure you could, but would you truly be happy?? And what about caring for the patients? Can you do it if your heart isn't in it? I don't think so.

Well...I suppose "technically" you could, but...if that's your motivation, what kind of nurse would that make you?? The whole idea is compassion and mercy and if you're there solely for the pay...??? I don't think it would work. I've had jobs in the past that I hated, but I needed the paycheck...my heart was NOT in what I did. You couldn't be a "good nurse" if your heart wasn't in what you did!! JMHO

    Here's why I asked:

Incredibly, I was talking to another nurse the other night who believes that nurses shouldn't get highly paid because then "there'll be nurses who are just in it for the money."

I think that yes, a nurse could get into nursing strictly for money. There are plenty of non-bedside jobs at which nurses have the potential to make alot of money.

As for keeping us low paid servants in order to keep us true to our profession....

Did you slap your friend right away, or were you too stunned to do it until a minute later?

I think it is quite possible to go into nursing for the money. But if that was the only motivation or the person finds nothing more in nursing than a well paying job, they won't stay. The psychic and emotional demands of nursing are too great for the only motivation for staying to be the money.

I wonder........Does this nurse believe the same concept should apply to doctors? Just curious.
