Calling in sick... Does it make you feel sicker?

  1. Had to call in today... Makes me feel so guilty! I've called in more this year than ever before! Twice in the last 6months! I Never call in but... did today...
I worry about them and hate it that someone has to cover for me!
But then again I haven't taken vacation time in.... I really can't remember the last time?
And where you work if you don't use your sick/vacation/PTO time do you lose half of it at the end of the year? Meaning they will buy it back at half time... doesn't really make sense to be penalized for being consciencious does it? (I don't think I spelled that word right)
So how do you feel about calling in?
Do you call in when you are sick?
What about if there's just something going on that you want to do?
    Mental health days?

I called in yesterday. The people I work with weren't to happy with me, but they'll get over it. Everybody else calls in frequently!! So, I called in! I just had to have the day off. I needed it.

Well I'm just a student, but I have weird issues with calling in to work or skipping class because I'm sick.

Like, I'll go in if I'm close to death, and suck it up, and get all self-righteous like "I had a 104 temp and I still went in!" But then, if I'm even slightly tired or have a headache the NEXT DAY, I'm like "OH, I'm still sick, can't go in!"

    I'm a dork like that.

I've been doing it a wee bit too often in the last year. My boss and I have had "the talk". Work makes me sick. The stress makes me sick. The demands on me to work miracles makes me sick. Makes me wonder why the bosses don't clue in that there's some kind of pattern in all the sick calls going on and (oh I don't know) do something to make the place a healthier place to be. But then again, that may be an impossible dream.

You know if I go to bed now I'll get 5 and 1/2 hours sleep before a very hard day tomorrow... maybe I should just call in instead then I could stay up and watch HGTV or SciFi! LOL
Okay I'm going to bed right now!

I called in sick today. I really was sick! I don't call off often but wish I hadn't today because my annual eval is next month!

I call in sick without guilt. Sometimes being a charge leader it's a hardship when I do call in. But so is working 12 hours while sick. I haven't been sick in over a year.

I also believe in calling in sick, but really needing a mental health day. Some days you just can't face it.

Don't feel guilty and I hope you get well soon.

Took me awhile to get over the guilt. Every single time someone or multiple people call in sick---somehow it always works out. So I try to remember that and take my mental health days. I don't call in sick on weekends though, I think that stinks unless you really are sick. Management seems to refuse to really look at why we call in sick (weekends included), they just want to punish us like children and not deal with the real issue.

I call in sick only when sick. I did call in once----not really sick just sick of work and felt worse all day for doing so. I was unable to relax, knowing I was not really "sick". I will never blame those who do for mental health reasons. I think they are legit at times---very legit. I have few mental health reasons for calling in sick since being a fulltime mom and only PRN nurse. SOMETIMES going to work HELPS MY MENTAL HEALTH or else I would be doomed to be around little-people-speak 24/7/365!!!!! Work is sometimes my salvation, rofl.

I call in sick whenever I need to and do not feel guilty about it. It's not often, but sometimes it's necessary for my wellbeing. One time I called out because I had not a dime to put in my gas tank to get me there. Has that ever happened to anyone else? Probably not, only me right?

Deb, I know what you mean about work being a salvation. During times of extreme stress and worry, if it wasn't for work to distract me for 12 hours, I would be a basket case. Perhaps that's why I haven't called in over a year.

I'll call in when contagious, and that includes a bad attitude! Though usually I choose to suck it up and put on the happy camper face. And oddly enough after about an hour with my residents and coworkers whatever put my chonies in a twist is forgotten....especially now with school, its a pleasure to lose myself in the physical demands of work...and we have been running short for cna's I hate to leave the women I work with an additional 8 residents apiece our regular aides are truly carrying the entire floor and I don't want to lose them to burnout. They are fabulous and all about raising standards.....

Tired as all get out yet totally content

I usually go to work in spite of being sick, hoping that I will feel better later in the day. I have taken three days sick leave over a three year period - I feel guilty when I stay off work. And I keep promising myself that I will stay off "next time" !!
