new york (ap) - starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "we built this city" as the worst song ever.

some tunes on the "50 worst songs ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

the list, which appears in the may issue, includes songs by new kids on the block, meat loaf, the doors, lionel richie, hammer and the beach boys, among others.

blender describes 1985's "we built this city" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

starship lead singer grace slick says, "this is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "now you're an actor. it's the same as meryl streep playing joan of arc."

rounding out the top 10: "achy breaky heart," billy ray cyrus; "everybody have fun tonight" wang chung; "rollin'," limp bizkit; "ice ice baby," vanilla ice; "the heart of rock & roll," huey lewis and the news; "don't worry be happy," bobby mcferrin; "party all the time," eddie murphy; "american life," madonna; and "ebony and ivory," paul mccartney and stevie wonder.

other songs on the list: toby keith's "courtesy of the red, white and blue" (no. 22); whitney houston's "greatest love of all" (no. 30); ricky martin's "she bangs" (no. 39); billy joel's "we didn't start the fire" (no. 41); simon & garfunkel's "the sounds of silence" (no. 42); the beatles'"ob-la-di, ob-la-da" (no. 48); and celine dion's "my heart will go on" (no. 50). blender and vh1's tv special "50 most awesomely bad songs ... ever" airs may 12

Yeah, apparently I have really bad taste, according to this list. :chuckle There are several that I like ...alot!

We Didn't Start the Fire was one of my favorites.

Ebony and Ivory? The Sound of Silence?

Hard to figure out what it is about some of them that was bad. But, I'm no music pro...far from it!

Seems I rarely agree with top 10 lists and this one is no exception!!

I take exception with alot of their choices, ie:

"We Built This City" Worst? Why this choice?? Guess I'll have to watch May 12 to see what they are getting at. At least since I won't agree I will get the chance hear some good old tunes.

"The Heart of Rock & Roll," They must just be jealous of Huey. :chuckle
"The Sounds of Silence" This was the song of a generation...very thought provoking...not at all bad, IMO!

"Ice Ice Baby," "Don't Worry Be Happy," "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" These judges must hate fun. These weren't masterpieces, but hey, "worst" ever? Hardly! Why didn't they slam "Rubber Ducky" then? I could see that one being on their list.

On this next one, they are wayyy out of line. I would put this one in the top best songs personally!! How dare they! :angryfire

I think some of the songs were picked because they were somewhat controversial. I mean, geez...they have to be politically correct, huh?

I have always hated that song.....

and lots of those on the list. But some I do like. My tastes are so eclectic, I am really weird. What else is new, rofl?

I like a lot of songs on that list. Funny how The Heart of Rock & Roll by Huey Lewis and The News was nominated for a grammy for Record of the Year and wound up on that list. I love that song.

Some of the songs I can agree with though. Party All The Time by Eddie Murphy is pretty bad.

I second that! Used to have a neighbor that played it LOUD over and over and over, because his little girl liked it. I thought I would surely go mad!

    Agree wholeheartedly.

They must be kiddin' with that list!

Sure sign it's bogus: No mention of "Hanky Panky"???

I seriously hate that song. Seriously.

I do have to disagree with S&G "Sounds of Silence." That is a great song, IMO. "Obla-Di-Obla-Da," while not the best Beatles song, still isn't THAT bad, compared to some of the other crap in the list.

I noticed that too. Wanna bet that those magazine editors and writers are all twenty-somethings?

I don't care for "We Built This City" however, but they put "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night" on the list and that is just plain wrong!
