Brian Nichols in custody

  1. This mad man is now in custody. I have one small question and concern. Why was a 6'1" 200 lb man on trial for a brutal rape and was found with two homemade knives in his shoes the day before, being escorted in the courtroom unrestrained with a "small", female officer?

I am thankful he is now in custody, but I am curious about the above procedures and policies of this department?

    I heard they got him..
You're right, it doesn't make much sense. This person is clearly dangerous..where was the concern for security?

We weren't there. We don't know what happened and it's too soon to start pointing fingers and assigning blame. Like as not, the investigation will show that the Fulton County Sheriff's department used standard procedure.

Who is pointing fingers and assigning blame? Three people killed and one seriously wounded by a person walking into a courtroom to be tried for a rape case, warrants "questions and concerns" about how and if this could have been prevented.

Maybe their "standard procedure" needs to be addressed. That is the point.

Questions like "where was the concern for security?" imply there was none which is pretty unfair to the FC Sheriff's Dept. Again, we don't know. I am sure since they lost one of their own officers and another one is in critical condition they are reviewing their procedures with a fine tooth comb since they have the most to lose when those procedures fail.

I'm a little defensive because I work in a courthouse and I know how hard the law enforcement officers work to maintain security. I think the fact that the female officer was only 5'1" and a female should not be made an issue of. She was a very experienced officer who I am sure is very competent and who has taken care of many other dangerous felons in the past. I have met many tiny law enforcement officers who could kick even the most hardened criminal's butt.

I agree with most of your post Sharon except the part that the officer being 5'1'' and female should not be made an issue of. I beg to differ. As much as we don't like to make an issue of female vs male in this country, sometimes (proabably most of the time) all the technique and experience one may have can't triumph over strength and power when someone is almost twice your size. I know that may not be a popular stance to take, but I do believe it.

She, or if it were a male officer, would have had a much better opportunity to defend herself from the surprise attack if he would have been in some type of restraint. Although, the attack should not have been a surprise since he is a criminal and the officers are trained for these types of sudden situations.

I am not blaming, just questioning at this point.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall"

It doesn't matter how big you are, it's how you put your body to use. I've taken on people twice my size and still come out on top. Calmness of mind more than makes up for power of fists.

I'm pretty sure cops are trained somehow in self-defence.

What if he knows how to put his body to use and also uses his size and power? So, if they both know how to use their body properly, which apparently he does, he still has the advantage of size and strength.

    Just a thought.

I'm just relieved to know this guy is off the streets and not out killing any more innocent ppl. He would have remained highly dangerous on the run.. like a cornered animal. He would have done ANYTHING to survive and keep from getting taken in. Scary.

    Glad they got him.

I am also glad they caught this guy. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims in this horrible crime. I am sure they are wondering how their loved ones can go to work one morning and never come home.

I heard an interview with a judge on NPR yesterday while I was driving home from my daughter's softball game. He knew the judge and the officer who were killed and talked about the kind of people they were. His voice broke as he was speaking about the judge, his good friend.

Senseless violence . . so glad the guy was caught.

The man that went into a courthouse for a hearing on his rape charge, managed to get a hold of a gun and shot dead a judge, a stenographer, and a sheriff while injuring another sheriff. He went into hiding but gave himself up.

    Its all over MSN.
