ANN ARBOR, Mich. --
An 8-year-old boy suffered burns in what prosecutors have called "tub torture," Local 4 reported.
The boy suffered third-degree burns on his feet and ankles when he was placed in scalding water as an alleged form of punishment by his mother's boyfriend in their Ypsilanti apartment.
Washtenaw County Sheriff Daniel Minzey said the discipline involved placing the child in hot water up his knees. He said the case was child abuse like he has never seen, Local 4 reported.
The boyfriend, whose name has not been released, could be arraigned on child abuse charges Wednesday.
Prosecutors said the boy's mother could also face charges because she was aware of the discipline for about two weeks. The woman's 6-year-old child and the couple's infant were both placed in foster care.
The court will decide whether the children can be returned to the mother's custody.
"I don't see how anyone can stand to let that happen to their child," said neighbor Juliet Morris. "That's torture."
Morris said the children in the apartment seemed to be getting along well. She said the 8-year-old boy once held a door open for her.
"He was a gentleman," said Morris.
The boy continues treatment at the University of Michigan Trauma and Burn Center. Dr. Maggie Brandt said third-degree burns usually require a skin graft.
