ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- An 8-year-old boy suffered burns in what prosecutors have called "tub torture," Local 4 reported.

The boy suffered third-degree burns on his feet and ankles when he was placed in scalding water as an alleged form of punishment by his mother's boyfriend in their Ypsilanti apartment.

Washtenaw County Sheriff Daniel Minzey said the discipline involved placing the child in hot water up his knees. He said the case was child abuse like he has never seen, Local 4 reported.

The boyfriend, whose name has not been released, could be arraigned on child abuse charges Wednesday.

Prosecutors said the boy's mother could also face charges because she was aware of the discipline for about two weeks. The woman's 6-year-old child and the couple's infant were both placed in foster care.

The court will decide whether the children can be returned to the mother's custody.

"I don't see how anyone can stand to let that happen to their child," said neighbor Juliet Morris. "That's torture."

Morris said the children in the apartment seemed to be getting along well. She said the 8-year-old boy once held a door open for her.

"He was a gentleman," said Morris.

The boy continues treatment at the University of Michigan Trauma and Burn Center. Dr. Maggie Brandt said third-degree burns usually require a skin graft.

There is something called "maternal instinct" that should of kicked -in....guess, in this case the "boyfriend comes first" instinct won.

that they even CONSIDER returning custody to her is criminal. Shows kids mean nothing in society, STILL! God this enrages me.

I am very tired this evening - long and challenging day at work - I don't have much reserve left for reading stories like this.

Neither the "mother" nor her boyfriend should get any of those kids back.

Ah but our child welfare system works so very well.

:angryfire Sending mom and her boyfriend to jail for a long time should be a NO-BRAINER!!! :angryfire AND...if the court returns those children to the mom, they need to be locked up for life too. :angryfire

am i misreading the above statement? it states the boyfriend could be arraigned on child abuse charges Wednesday...

are they emphasizing Wednesday or there's a remote possibility he might not be arraigned?

i've said it in another post but sometimes it scares me the thoughts i'm capable of..... :angryfire

Wouldn't it be nice if we could subject some of these wretched excuses for life to the same things they enjoy doing to others?! I know i sound sadistic but i was in a rather foul mood anyway today (a&P 2 test) and that just really set me off!

There aren't enough bad words in the entire English language to call someone who would subject an innocent child to such pain and suffering. As for the so-called 'mother'........what is it with some women and their supposed boyfriends??!! The BF can do no wrong, even if he half-kills their precious children........maybe I don't understand because I've been married to my childrens' father for almost 25 years, but if it ever came to a choice between him or my kids, the kids would win hands-down. Not that I don't love him, but if he'd been abusive to them in some way, I'd have sent him packing........the way I figure it is, an adult can make his or her own decisions, whether right or wrong, but children need to be protected until they're old enough to make their own decisions. I hope that mother loses parental rights for good.....that poor little boy didn't deserve that kind of treatment, in fact NOBODY deserves that kind of treatment, except maybe the a**h*** who burned him!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire
